Climate change is said to impact billions. In India, the effects of climate change are already being felt – erratic weather, delays in the monsoon, the worsening agrarian crisis, storms in Uttar Pradesh, landslides in Manipur, recent floods in Chennai, all tell their own devastating tales. Disaster and the impact on farmers livelihoods and communities dependent on natural resources requires deep thought and strategic action by multiple stakeholders, especially communities. Climate compatible development is a way where we can create development that minimises the harm caused by climate change and maximises the many human development opportunities.
The “Climate Compatible DevelopmentFilmFestival, India 2015” is being organised by Assam Times Foundation, in association with The Climate and Development Knowledge Network (CDKN) and Television Trust for Environment (TVE) which is to be held on December 18 (5 pm) at NEDFi House Auditorium, Dispur, Guwahati. The event is open to all. The screening will be followed by a panel discussion to be participated by climate change researchers, environmentalist, bureaucrats, development professionals, film makers, journalists, students and professors.
The selected films tell stories on the impact of climate change on diverse communities from Uttarakhand to Bangladesh. Loss of livelihoods, distress migration, destruction of crops and fisheries, is the reality that many face on a day-to-day basis. And yet there are inspiring change strategies adopted by communities, such as seed banks that sell climate resilient seeds and engaging the voices of women to be part of village planning and local governance.
Films have huge potential to galvanise action, spur discussion, inspire youth and communities, and create synergies between different stakeholders, spread awareness on issues and showcase best practises. Issues, such as climate change that affect diverse groups require action at multiple different levels and by different sets of change agents.

Properties worth Rs 1 crore has been reduced to ashes when a major fire broke out in Nalbari town on Monday. The local businessman injured in the shocking shoot out in Dhubri is battling for life on Monday. The Delhi government has agreed to set up a statute of Chaolung Sukapha in the national capital. The assurance came from Delhi Chief minister Sheila Dixit who talked to her Assam counterpart Tarun Gogoi. Before that Gogoi in a letter requested Dixit to consider the proposal to set up the first Ahom king in the national capital. Local residents in Goalpara district beat him a suspected militant to death on Saturday night. Three motorcycles suspected to have been used by the militants were recovered from the area.One bomb is suspected to be concealed in the MLA's house and a bomb disposal squad of the police reached the place, they added. A series of low intensity blasts has forced the security forces to fan in lower Assam on Sunday. Suspected ULFA militants on Saturday night set off eight IED blasts in a space of 90 minutes targeting the house of an AIDUF MLA and crowded markets in Goalpara and Dhubri districts. There, is, however, no report of casualty.ULFA, along with some other insurgents group, gave a call for boycotting the Republic Day celebrations. Over 20 people have been injured when a passenger bus slipped into deep gorge in near Guwahati on Saturday.The accident took place at around 2-30 in the afternoon when the passenger bus was on its way to Kamakhya and suddenly it lost control and fell on a gorge where several people were rescued by police and local residents.
