Dr Bora receives Abdul Malik award

Assam Sahitya Sbaha president Dr Dhrubajyoti Bora received the Syed Abdul Malik award at a function in Golaghat on Sunday. Instituted by the Golaghat branch of Asom Sahitya Sabha, the award was given away to Dr Bora for his novel Swargadopi dealing with the life and contribution of Biju Vaishnav, the martyr of the independence struggle hailing from the Numaligarh tea garden area.

Several prominent persons attended the function at the Amateur Theatre Hall in Golaghat.

The Golaghat police arrested a youth in connection with extortion case in in Sarupather on Sunday.Identified as Gopal Orang, he was picked up from Duckenhengera near Kothiatoli after he demanded Rs 5 lakh from a govt employee Lakhi Orang in the name of NDFB(S).His name figured when Sarupathar police arrested an AANLA militant Mahesh Orang in extortion charges a few days back.

A college girl was crushed to death dead by a speeding truck leaving a pall of gloom in the entire Golaghat district on Saturday.The tragic incident took place at Balijan area in Dergaon where a moving truck crushed to death Seema Das when she was on her way to college on a bicycle in the morning.Immediately after the incident the truck managed to flee from the spot. The HS first year student of Dergaon Junior College died on the spot.

In yet another effort to woo the people six months ahead of assembly polls, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Friday said his government was in a process to provide 2200 youths in rural Assam under the State Livelihood Mission.In a tweet on Friday, Gogoi said more than 1800 youths are taking training and will also be provided placement as against the target of 32,000 employments this year in various sectors.According to him, the state has a long way to go in implementation of employment generation schemes through skill development.Under Assam State Livelihood Mission we could provide employment to 2200 youths from rural Assam to several parts of the country.— Tarun Gogoi (@tarun_gogoi)...

Tezpur University and Academy of Media Studies jointly bagged the first position in the All Assam Debate Competition in Golaghat on Friday. Dibrugarh university stood second followed by Guwahati ICA in the competition organised by Golaghat PurvanchalikMahavidhyalay and Dronkanta Saikia memorial trust. The subject was Media is the root cause of all disturbance in Assam. Thirty two institutions participated in the competition with 50 participants. Earlier the flag was hoisted by Anil Sharma and a meeting was held presided over by Dr Kajal Saikia. The judges were Dwipen Dutta, Dinesh Gogoi, Mrinal Kumar Saikia.
