Much to their utter disappoint, BJP central leadership has asked nine sitting Congress MLAs to contact state president Siddharth Bhattacharya who was not aware of the political development.
According to sources, Bhattacharya received no information either from Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma who took the lead or from the central leadership.
Dr Sarma , however, justified that since they have not joined the party and that they met Amit Shah to support the Narendra Modi government, that’s why, Bhattacharya was absent from the scene.
Talking to Assam Times, Dr Sarma said that the nine sitting Congress MLAs would join the party at a convenient date in consultation with Bhattacharya. The Congress MLAs include Jayanta Malla Baruah, Piyush Hazarika, Kripanath Malla, Abu Taher Bepari, Bolin Chetia, Rajen Borthakur, Monsingh Rongpi along with two others.

Governor J B Patnaik said that the government's counter insurgency operations have fetched dividends where the republic day boycott call was defied. In his address after unfurling the national flag in Khanapara in Guwahati, he said that steps are being taken to bring about overall socio-economic development in the state.

A powerful Improvised Explosive Devices was recovered ahead of the Republic Day celebrations in Darrang district on Thursday.The bomb was found near the Mangaldoi police station and Republic Day parade ground in the morning. Chief minister Tarun Gogoi said that the Army court had taken a lenient view of the crime. He told reporters in Jorhat that he would urge the defence ministry to review the case to ensure proper justice to the 19-year-old victim.
