Margherita rape: students slam media

The students in Margherita College have slammed the media fraternity for not properly raising the rape and murder case which shocked the entire state last month.

The student union President and General Secretary Arjun

Pradhan and Deepjyoti Gogoi have charged the television channels with downplaying the anger of the people after 4 construction workers raped and killed a college girl near Burma Camp on her way to home.

"Had it been in New Delhi and Mumbai, the channels would have been highlighting it time and again. Since Margherita is an interior place that's the state media fraternity is least bothered about it," said rued.

They further alleged that like the national news channels, the state electronic media has been following the sensational Sheena Bora and Sweety Baruah murder cases.

"Most of the channels have made Yakub Menon news a national issue. But they have not took the Margherita rape and murder story to the centre stage of focus," said the student union leaders.

Saiseng Tamang a BA fifth semester student of Margherita College said, "the Delhi Gangrape become a national issue with hails of protest across the country. The brutal gangrape and murder in Margherita is still to be major issue even after protest from Margherita student fraternity.

They said that the culprits must get capital punishment and the victim must get the justice. They further threatened to intensify the agitation if the culprits are allowed to remain safe.
