Why Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma is in a haste to join BJP? Political observers are straight in their comments. He is believed to have unofficially joined BJP in the face of two huge scams that put him in dire straights.
Very recently, BJP parliamentary board called him the key suspect in the Louis Berger scam only a month back. A CID enquiry is in progress which will unearth the real story.
The Central Bureau of Investigation probing the chit fund scam has already grilled Dr Sarma on the basis of the purported letter by Saradha chiefSudipto Sen. CBI has yet to file the charge-sheet.

Now that he joined bjp to save himself for all the scams it will be all the more difficult to prove. He is an opportunist and that's what we don't like. It was bjp who was most vocal about his corruption. Why have they accepted him now? Shouldn't Assam produce more leaders? He already has enough: TV channel, newspaper, guest house, stashed cash and what not. We need honest leaders not tainted. You are spreading the propaganda. Bada aya.

Dispur on Friday has asked the onion traders across the state to sell onion for Rs 65 per kg. According to information available with assamtimes, all district administrations have received instructions from Dispur to strictly enforce the onion price. The government further urged the people to lodge complaint against the traders who demand more than Rs 65 per kg.
In a historic judgment, the Jorhat sessions court on Friday ordered life imprisonment for a surrendered Ulfa man in connection with a sensational murder case in the district. The court passed the life imprisonment order for SULFA man Rajib Dutta confirming his vital role in the murder of businessman Pinku Bora in 2003. According to information, Dutta is likely to move the high court challenging the judgment.
Assam government on Friday has warned strict action against sale of salt at exorbitant price citing grim scarcity of the essential commodity. Talking to reporters in Dispur on Friday food and civil supply minister Dr Nazrul Islam said that the state has sufficient stock of salt for the next 6 months. He said that those claiming rate more than Rs 10 per kg must face stern action. Meanwhile, over 20 salt retailers have been arrested for selling salt at an exorbitant rate.
All of a sudden, people across the started buyins salt on Thursday. A section of businessmen picked up the first buck and started selling the essential commodity @ 200 per kg. Some others stocked salts to claim more rate. Within a few hours salt vanished from the shops and markets in Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Sivasagar and Jorhat. The panic buying started acting on a rumour that Gujrat has stopped supplying salts to Assam. A television news channel aired the story of how salts are available for Rs 200 per kg. But the story was withdrawn later. The government called it a rumour and asked the people not be panic further.
A 75 year old woman was strangulated to death in Guwahati on Thursday night sending shockwaver across the state. The incident took place near the Kamakhya temple where Ratul Athpuria killed his grandmother as she refused to give him money. Ratul strangulated his grandmother Kunjalata to death and managed to flee. Police registered a case and investigation is going on.
In yet another incident that touches off seismic waves of protest and anger across the state, the temporary statue of Laxminath Bezbarua was romoved on Thursday. The statue, installed as a mark of respect for the doyen of Assamese literature was suddenly removed just before chief minister Tarun Gogoi arrived the book fair to attend a function in the evening. The statue was reinstalled following sharp reaction and protest. Later the chief minister said that the statue should not have been removed for security reasons. The organizers said that they did it only at the instance of the chief minister's security officials.

Despite stiff protest even in the form of week-long bandh, high turn out was recorded in the first phase polling for Rabha Hasong autonomous body in parts of Kamrup and Goalpara districts on Wednesday. Polling began at 7 in the morning in 6 constituency in Kamrup along with 7 constituencies in Goalpara districts where voters were seen in lonp queue till 3 in the afternoon. In yet another landmark judgment, Gauhati High Court on Tuesday ordered lifer for five tea garden officials in Jorhat district in connection with a rape and murder case. A division bench of the court on Tuesday rejected the Jorhat session court where the alleged perpetrators were acquitted citing lack of evidence. The court asked the authorities to send the accused to the jail immediately. The incident took place in 1992 at Gotonga tea garden where three officials along with two other officials from a nearby tea estate repeatedly raped an 18-year old girl before cutting her body into pieces.
