Tai Ahom, Koch Rajbanshi, Moran, Mutocks along with two others are likely to get ST status.
The good news for the six communities has come from the Centre when the six ethnic communityleaders hunkered down with Union tribal affairs minister Juel Ornam in New Delhi on Thursday.
Flanked by sports minister Sarbabanda Sonowal, Ornam said the Centre will have to change the modalities in the soon to be held cabinet meeting.
After the seal of approval from the cabinet, the modalities would be ready. It would take two or three months to complete the entire proceedings.
Later the delegation talked to union home minister Rajnath Singh at his official residence.
The move assumed significance despite the escalating protest of the existing ST people.

The other two are tea tribes and Sutiya not chutia. Ahom , Koch and Sutiya were ruling class of Assam during medievel period. Next time please name the ''other two'' as sentiments are related to it.

The Supreme Court has directed the eight north eastern states to formulate common rules to deal with the cases of racial attack outside the region.Hearing a public interest litigation on Friday, a division bench of the apex court comprising chief justice of India and Justice Ranjan Gogoi asked the north eastern state governments to submit the rules to stop racial attack by the next 7 months.The PIL was filed in view of the growing cases of racial attack on the north eastern people in New Delhi along with some other states. DoNER minister Pawan Singh seemingly is waging war against Ranne Narah after she revealed that Ghatowar paid BJP leader Sarbananda Sonowal Rs 4 crore four months back.Narah said that apart from Sonowal, Ghatowar further paid Rs 1.50 crore to BJP MLA Prasanta Phukan for helping the ruling party candidates win the Rajya Sabha polls.Ghatowar told reporters in Delhi that he would lodge a complaint before the party high command against Ranee Narah.

Dispur police have arrested a youth in the city charging him with trying to extort money from Prafullla Kumar Mahanta.Identified as Dipak Gogoi, he was arrested acting on the FIR lodged by the former chief minister and AGP president on Thursday.According to the complaint, Mahanta received several phone calls from him demanding money to avoid shoot out. Apart from threat calls, Gogoi threw several messages from two mobile phones.

Security forces claimed to have killed two more NDFB-S militants at an encounter in Chirang district on Thursday.The encounter between NDFB-S and security forces took place at Phulbari along the Indo-Bhutan border where both the militants were killed on the spot.Later they were identified as Bipul Narzary and Punkha Basumatary. Police further claimed to have recovered pistol, magazine, hand grenade along with extortion notes from their possession.
