Tai Ahom, Koch Rajbanshi, Moran, Mutocks along with two others are likely to get ST status.
The good news for the six communities has come from the Centre when the six ethnic communityleaders hunkered down with Union tribal affairs minister Juel Ornam in New Delhi on Thursday.
Flanked by sports minister Sarbabanda Sonowal, Ornam said the Centre will have to change the modalities in the soon to be held cabinet meeting.
After the seal of approval from the cabinet, the modalities would be ready. It would take two or three months to complete the entire proceedings.
Later the delegation talked to union home minister Rajnath Singh at his official residence.
The move assumed significance despite the escalating protest of the existing ST people.

The other two are tea tribes and Sutiya not chutia. Ahom , Koch and Sutiya were ruling class of Assam during medievel period. Next time please name the ''other two'' as sentiments are related to it.

Yet another gangrape incident has made Guwahati to hang its head in shame.The incident took place in Jalukbari area where three persons gangraped a girl on Monday wee hours.According to allegations, they forced her to consume highly objectionable with food and then gangraped her one after another.Later acting on the complaint, Jalukbari police have arrested the perpetrators. Tension seems to have been escalating in Tinsukia a day after one person was killed and ten others have been injured when a section of people clashed to security forces during an eviction drive at a forest area.The incident took place on Sunday afternoon when security forces were on a drive to evict the encroachers in the Namfai forest area in Jagun.A section of the encroachers tuned violent forcing the security forces to lob tear gas shell. As the situation went out of control, the security forces resorted to firing where one person was killed and ten others sustained injury.
The Gauhati High Court is expected to clear it judgments on four other bail petitions moved by Akhil Gogoi on Monday.The judgments are expected at any moment. Even if the court grants bail on Monday, the KMSS president would not be able to come out of the jail.He has several other cases pending against him. The court has already cleared bails in alteast seven cases. The crucial one was the self immolation case in Dispur.
