Gogoi urges Rajnath for Special Category

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi impressed upon the Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh to restore 90:10 fund pattern for the North Eastern States and put the Region into Special Category Status.

Delivering at the meeting of the Union Home Minister with the Chief Ministers of North Eastern States, Chief Minister Gogoi said that the development of the Region will be expedited if the Centre restores the Special Category Status for the North Eastern States. Gogoi said peace of the region is intrinsically associated with the development and without the Special Category Status and restoration of 90:10 fund pattern for the centrally sponsored schemes development of the Region is not possible.

Claiming that the terrorism in Assam is at the lowest ebb, Gogoi also urged upon the Union Home Minister to take necessary steps to act against the terrorists taking refuge in the foreign soils of Myanmar, Bhutan and Bangladesh. Gogoi also underscored the importance of identifying factors fuelling terrorism and also talked at length on the need of alienating them from the people, modernization of police force and civil policing as critical areas for dealing with terrorism. He also talked on the rise of communal forces in the State and the State Government’s conviction to tackle such problem.

Gogoi said that there should be parity between fund sanction and release by the Centre as the delay in releasing fund leads to impediment of growth and development. Gogoi said considering Assam located at the seismic zone and flood and erosion create havoc in the state, Centre should allot adequate fund for disaster management and border affairs management. Gogoi also cited that Assam has already lost more than 4 lakh hectares of land to erosion.

Citing the withdrawal of Backward Region Fund by the Centre, Gogoi said unless the dispensation at the Centre pays special attention to the North East, development will be slowed down which might fuel rise of subversive forces again.

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh lauded Chief Minister Gogoi and his government’s concerted efforts in tackling insurgency and improving law and order situation in Assam.

Union Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju, Union Minister of State for Sports and Youth Affairs Sarbananda Sonowal, DoNER Minister Dr. Jiendra Singh, Chief Ministers of Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Tripura, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland and the Home Minister of Sikkim along with top officials of the civil, army and police administrations were present at the meeting.
