It was a homely meeting organized at Guwahati Press Club that witnessed the release of a travel fiction titled Ontarior Seuj Dalisat (Over Green Carpet of Ontario) and penned by Dr Jagadindra Raychoudhury in presence of several senior journalists. Inaugurating the book, Swapnaneel Barua, a scholar and also a senior bureaucrat of Assam, pointed out that the writer not only documented various events related to his visit to Canada, but also painted a humanist reminiscence with his created characters.
The function, held on 1 July 2015, was also addressed by senior journalists like Hiten Mahanta, Rupam Barua, PJ Barua, Mukul Kalita, Ranen Kumar Goswami, Nava Thakuria and Pramod Kalita. Moderated by journalist Sabita Lahkar, the meeting was graced by acclaimed story writer Jyotish Sikder, professors Anup Talukder & Nirmali Medhi, singers Anindita Choudhury & Kishor Giri and Bitopan & Sneha. A prolific writer, Dr Raychoudhury is an associate professor of B Barua College, Guwahati and contributor to various Assam based newspapers and magazines. A smiling personality Dr Raychoudhury is also a regular participant in various radio programs and television talk shows. Published by Basundhara publication of Hatigaon in Guwahati, the book has 192 pages with a nice cover designed by prominent artist Padma Singha. It is priced at Rs 250/- per copy.

A special court in Guwahati on Wednesday remanded three ACS officers to police custody for 14 days hours after they the trio were arrested from different places in connection with the job for cash scam in the Assam Public Service Commission. Identified as Bhaskarjyoti Dev Sharma, the circle officer of Helem in Biswanath Chariali, Amit Sarma, the circle officer Sipahjar and circle officer from Nalbari Bhaskar Dutta were produced before the court seeking 14 days remand which the court allowed. Police, probing the scam confirmed the allegations against the trio acting on the forensic report of their answer scripts. Then they got administrative nod for action against them.

Hours after the Dibrugarh police arrested three ACS officers in the cash for job scam, DGP Mukesh Sahay gave hint of action against a few other officers who allegedly procured job for money. Talking to reporters on Wednesday, Sahay said the probe into the scam was moving in right direction. Early in the morning police arrested Amitjyoti Mahanta, Bhaskarjyoti DevSarma and Bhaskar Das to be brought to Kahilipara where a team of police officer is interrogating the trio. The Jamiat Ulems-I-Hind has submitted a set of papers in support of the cut off year in the Assam Accord, 1985 before the Supreme Court which is hearing a set of petition from May 8. An anti corruption cell on Tuesday arrested a senior police officer on bribery charges suggesting non stop extortion on traders by a circle of police officers. Senior Congress leader and former minister Bijit Saikia is dead at the age of 78leaving a pall of gloom in the state’s political scene. Saikia, who was a minister in the Hiteswar Saikia cabinet died at the Down Town Hospital in Guwahati on Tuesday where he was undergoing treatment for a couple of weeks. Many parties, organizations and individuals have condoled Saikia’s death and conveyed deep sympathy to the bereaved family members. The Dispur police have arrested a youth in Guwahati a couple of days after he in social media threatened to shoot dead Akhil Gogoi. Identified as Nilotpal Baruah, he was arrested by a team of Dispur police acting on a complaint lodged by KMSS. Police interrogation is in progress and the youth is believed to have confessed it. In his Facebook status, he said that he would riddle the peasant leader with his licensed arms forcing KMSS to move Dispur police.
