Priyam Hazarika memorial function held

Dr. Bhupen Hazarika Foundation, with the help of Pragjyoti Communications, organised a special function held on Wednesday at the Guwahati Press Club in memory of Priyam Hazarika, distinguished artist, an ardent lover of Assamese culture and Xudhakontho Dr. Bhupen Hazarika’s wife. The function was co-ordinated by Dipanka Hazarika, secretary of Dr. Bhupen Hazarika Foundation. Eminent artist Loknath Goswami, describing late Priyam Hazarika as a legend said that the towering personality can be the subject of an wonderful novel. Eminent educationist Dr. Anil Goswami recalled Proyam Hazarika’s iconic dance to the tune of Sagor Sangamot in the movie ‘Erabator Sur’.

Popular writer, journalist and actor Dr. Akshitara described Priyam Hazarika as the backbone of Dr. Bhupen Hazarika and said that getting Priyam Hazarika as Assam’s daughter in law was Assam’s privilege. Dr. Bhupen Hazarika’s eldest sister, eminent singer Sudakshina Sharma became emotional while recalling the days when Priyam Hazarika came to Assam after her marriage in 1953. She recalled how Dr. Bhupen Hazarika had once told that Priyam had made him a better man. Bhupen Hazarika’s brother Balen Hazarika also became emotional remembering Priyam Hazarika. He recalled how she had managed the entire household at Kharghuli.

Dr. Bhupen Hazarika’s sister Kabita Barua , Advocate Arnab Jan Deka, Journalists Pankaj Kr. Dutta and Rhiddhis Chakravorty also spoke about their personal experiences with Priyam Hazarika. Cultural organiser Gobinda Mohan Goswami emphasised the need to preserve her memorabilia like those of Dr. Bhupen Hazarika. Also present on the occasion were Utpal Bezbarua, Debabala Devi, Dr. Paramananda Majumdar, Dr. Jayashree Bora, Nilima Das, Bhaskar Phukan, Mukut Ochan Kalita, Ranu Duwarah, Tulan Chandra Bora, Kiran Hazarika, Dr. Sangita Chowdhury and other folloers of Priyam Hazarika and representatives of various media houses.

The much-hyped efforts for preservation of ancient monuments seems to have failed to reach a section of people. A section of these must-see monuments is languishing in dying agony. That too in the heart of Guwahati city. The example may be made of the Ugratara temple and the Jorpukhuri beside it. The things have reached such a paralyzing extent that a circle of conscious citizens in Guwahati has to write to the district authorities for intervention. Information Forum, umbrella organization of RTI activists of Assam, staged protest in front of the Morigaon district Deputy Commissioner office on Saturday, demanding arrest of the killer of Atikur Rahman, an RTI activist of Lahorighat locality of Morgaon district. Rahman’s body with injure marks on head was recovered on January 15 in a remote road side area of Lahorighat. His family alleged that some influential people were behind his murder as he continued fight against corruption of local PRI system. The was stated in a press release.

Pongyong Tekchai, a collection of articles, written by noted  writer Rajiv Ahmed and published by Sampriti Prakashan, was released on Mondy at a  function organised in Guwahati Press club.
