The overall flood scene goes from bad to worse on Wednesday when the surging waters have submerged more areas in 7 districts.
The Brahmaputra and its tributaries have been flowing above the danger level suggesting that it tends to take more grave turn. The rising water level have breached embankments, inundated villages and damaged crop apart from rendering over 1 lakh people homeless.
According to the State Disaster Management Authority, the first wave of flood has affected 18 revenue circles in Lakhimpur and Dhemaji in eastern Assam, where nearly 45,000 people were affected by the overflowing rivers. Tinsukia is hit by the incessant rains forcing the authorities to set up three relief camps.
The Brahmaputra is flowing over the danger mark in Nimatighat in Jorhat district, several villages in the river-island of Majuli have been also inundated. Solengi, Chatrang and Sessa — all tributaries of the Brahmaputra — have inundated villages and standing crops, affecting over 21,000 people in the Gohpur sub-division of Sonitpur.
Nearly 38,000 hectares of standing crop, mostly paddy, have been damaged by the overflowing rivers. Dhemaji is worst hit with 2,300 hectares of standing crop being destroyed to be followed by Sonitpur, Goalpara, Lakhimpur and Kamrup.

The Assam Secretariat and other offices have been declared as a protected area. The order was issued by Kamrup (Metro) Deputy Commissioner Ashutosh Agnihotri, who directed that none except bonafide residents and public servants of the secretariat and other offices could enter the area without prior permission. A grenade explosion rocked Belshri railway station in Sonitpur district on Friday. But there was no report of any injury. According to police, a five-member group of unidentified persons on motorcycles lobbed two grenades at a paddy field at Belshri under Misamari Police station at around 3.30 in the afternoon. At least five persons were killed when a the vehicle carrying them collided head on in a dumper Palashbari area in the outskirt of Guwahati on Friday.The shocking accident took place in the afternoon at Bhagawatipara where a women died on the spot. Four others succumbed to injuries on the way to hospital. The deceased were identified as Amulya Kalita, Ratan Kalita, Prafulla Mahanta, Putul Kumari and Damayanti Sarma.
