Concern over rise of trafficking cases

Conflict related displacement in the districts of Kokrajhar, Chirang and Dhubri has made dual vulnerability to poor children’s due to which agent / trafficker take due advantage of the poor children in the promise of providing better opportunities.

Recently on May 28,the DBAI, Chennai rescued a young minor girl name Kamiya Mardi (name changed) of 5 years old hailing from Odlaguri village under Gossaigaon sub division of Kokrajhar district was found wailing in the Eggmore Railway Station, Chennai. The small kid was found all alone looking for her mother, but her mother could not be found anywhere in the vicinity because she is trafficked.

Kamiya Mardi is a young girl of 5 years old, who has been missing from home since May 20(2015). Kamiya along with her mother went missing on May 20 while on their way to attend a ceremonial function in nearby village.

Father of Kamiya Mardi holding the picture of his daughter urging everybody to support finding her and the Nedan Foundation as a part of anti human trafficking in the region has been responding to the needs of children in need of care and support. After receiving the news Nedan immediately carried out a home enquiry in order to find out the residence of the girl.

The Nedan successfully could trace the address of the young girl and is in the process of repatriation of the girl back to Kokrajhar. The father expressed grief concern for the missing child and said it was a shocking incident for them as he used to care his wife and children a lot.

The condition of child trafficking is a serious problem. As such, proper planning is required to handle this situation. Assam is being ranked as one of the 8th Indian states with regard to Child Trafficking .

Yet again the last incident of 29 May in the Kokrajhar railway station that show the sharp rise in the trafficking case where 17 minor girls were rescued by the team of Nedan foundation along with the Kokrajhar railway police and other student union bodies. All the 17 girls are from different place of Kokrajhar and Chirang district of BTC Assam.

Among the seventeen girls seven of them were already working in Tamil Nadu and they came to take other girls in the false hope of giving job with the help of agent. Poverty has been the main reason for this young girls being an easy prey in the hands of trafficker.

From December 2014 till date Nedan has rescued and repatriated 17 minor boys and girls belonging from different parts of Kokrajhar, Dhubri and Chirang district. 10 children are yet to be traced who are in different shelter homes of West Bengal. It was stated in a release by Nedan Foundation,a Kokrajhar based NGO.
