Modi visit may fetch Anup Chetia!
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s proposed visit to Dhaka is expected to clear the decks for deporting Anup Chetia to boost the peace process with ULFA.
Sources told Assam Times in New Delhi that Modi will raise the issue during his trip Dhaka which would help Assam get the ULFA founder general secretary back.
“Chetia’s comeback is expected to boost the ULFA-Centre peace process which will help BJP woo voters in the run up to the assembly polls early next year,” say sources.
For the last couple of years, the Centre has been keen to get Chetia back. The UPA government signed extradition treaty after the ULFA leader himself evinced keen interest to be deported. But Dhaka’s delaying tactic made it difficult to be implemented.
“Dhaka is averse to deport Chetia only because of the uncertainty over the land deal which was running into a hail of protest in Assam. Since the uncertainty is over that’ why, Dhaka is bound to extradite the ULFA top leader who has been languishing in a local jail in Dhaka for the last many years,” a senior home ministry official told Assam Times.

The Centre on Monday assured the Meghalaya government of all possible help to bail out the state from the law and order lapses. The Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi today has approved the ‘Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana’ - a path breaking scheme for farmers’ welfare. The surrendered ULFA activists staged demonstration in New Delhi on Tuesday demanding inner line permit in the state apart from raising a few other issues. At 10 in the morning, more than 50 surrendered ULFA activists thronged the Jantar Mantar in the capital and started the dharma. "We want ILP in the state. Apart from this we do demand rehabilitation of our activists at an earlier date," said a protestor. Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi is all prepared to stage dharna in front of Parliament on Wednesday alleging non receipt of central funds to the state. Party MPs from both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha are also joining Gogoi at 11 in the morning. Senior Congress leaders told Assam Times that along with the Ex-Assam MPs, they want party president Sonia Gandhi to join the dharna. Gogoi announced the dharna plan a couple of days back giving a deadline. As assembly polls are round the corner days are not far for six ethnic communities in Assam to get ST status. The Election Commission is preparing to hold Assam assembly polls early next year. Sources told Assam Times that the polls are likely to take place in three phase from March-end to be completed before the Rongali Bihu which falls on April 15. Hundreds of people from Assam staged dharna in New Delhi raising a slew of demands on Monday.
