After years of hopes and aspiration, Assam gets its Mega food park in Tihu—first of its kind in the north east.
Local people and economists called it a major boost to the food processing sector which will help the state add value and reduce food wastage.
Chief minister Tarun Gogoi and Union Minister for Food Processing Industries Harsimrat Kaur Badal opened the park at a function attended by union minister of state for home Kiren Rijiju and sports minister Sarbananda Sonowal.
Officials told Assam Times that the Centre sanctioned a Mega Food Park to M/s North East Mega Food Park Pvt. Ltd in the district. The North East Mega Food Park has been set up in 50 acre of land at the cost of Rs. 76 crore.
It has facilities of fully operational industrial sheds for SMEs, developed industrial plots for lease to food processing units, Dry Warehouse of 10000 MT, Cold Storages of 3000 MT, Common Effluent Treatment plant, Quality Control Labs etc.
The common administrative building for office and other uses by the entrepreneurs. 6 PPCs are also proposed to be set up at Nagaon, Badarpur, Tinsukia, Barapani, Krishnai and Kajalgaon which will provide facilities for primary processing and storage near the farms.
Badal said that the Mega Food Park will leverage an additional investment of about Rs. 250 crore in 30-35 food processing units in the Park and generate a turnover of about Rs. 450-500 Crore annually.
In his speech, Rijiju said that the Mega Food Park shall go a long way in helping the farmers of the North East. He said that the NE Region has great potential for Food Processing and the Government has taken many steps to promote the Food Processing sector as well as Organic Farming in the region.

NDFB chairman Ranjan Daimary walks free on Sunday two days after he procured bail in all crucial cases. Immediately after walking out of the Guwahati Central jail, Daimary left for his home place Udalguri to be welcomed by the local residents. Braving a rising mercury voters are lined up across 862 booths in the ongoing civic polls in Guwahati city on Wednesday. Assamtimes team came to see the huge queue of voters even before 7 in the morning. Talking Assamtimes, polling authorities hoped that the turn out would cross 80 percent. Altogether 7,06,689 voters are expected to excercise their franchise in the single phase polling on Wednesday.

Amid tight security polling in the Guwahati civic bodies begins across the city. Over 7 lakh voters are free to decide on the fate of172 ward councillors along with 356 area sabha candidates.
