Toll gate attacked in Chirang

Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) activists today attacked a toll gate at Dahalapara along the 31 c national highway under Bijni subdivision of Chirang district.

According to sources said around a hundred KMSS activists and locals attacked and damaged the toll gate which is run by a Mumbai based Indradeep Construction Company, seven persons said to be money collectors at the toll gate were injured in the attack, besides 25 computers, 35 CCTV were damaged in the attacked.

Conflict was going on in a toll gate on National Highway in the state since it was installed in many parts with angry public demanding lifting of the toll gate. The Krishak Mukhti Sangram Samity (KMSS) has been demanding to eradicate the toll gates installed in the Highways passing through Assam.

 KMSS leader Akhil Gogoi had lashed out  at the central government for allotting companies to collect tax from the National highways of Assam by establishing toll gates in various places of the state. He also urged the people to demolish such gates. 

It is alleged that the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has also increased the tax considerably from the vehicles plying along the National Highway at Dahalapara toll gate.

There is angry among the vehicle owners about the collection of tax in the toll gate. Sources said an amount of Rs 300 to Rs 150 is charge on heavy vehicles and Rs 60 is charge on small vehicle. Rs 30 per vehicle are charged from vehicles bearing Bongaigaon and Chirang registration number, the local public alleged.

Some of the driver alleged that the collector in the toll gate do not pay receipt while collecting tax from the vehicles travelling at night.

The gate was totally attacked and later angry mob had also set a fire to the gate.However,police and fire tenders rushed the spot after 30 minutes and managed doused the fire. 

 Chirang deputy commissioner and SP visited the spot to take stock of the incident.
