The slow construction of the RCC culvert on B.G. Road at the junction of Changmai and Gohain villages in Singhadwar, Hanhchara of Sivasagar district, has disrupted the daily life of the public and caused immense inconvenience. The temporary diversion road constructed alongside is also slippery and uneven, making it very difficult for vehicles and pedestrians to navigate during rainfall. The B.G. Road, also known as the Sivasagar-Nazira Road, is one of the busiest roads in Sivasagar district, with thousands of vehicles plying on it daily. However, the administration and the Public Works Department seem to be indifferent to the issue. Despite the ongoing construction work under the Assam...
In response to the recent spate of attacks on working journalists in Assam, the Nazira Hangabadik Mancha has submitted a memorandum to the Home Minister of Assam through the Co-District Commissioner (CDC) of Nazira, calling for a thorough investigation and justice for the victims. The memorandum comes in the wake of disturbing incidents where journalists from two satellite news channels—ND24 and PRAG NEWS—were reportedly assaulted while on duty. Bimaljyoti Nath, ND24’s correspondent from Dekiajuli, and Madhurya Saikia, PRAG NEWS’s Dhemaji correspondent from Silapathar, were targeted by unidentified miscreants in separate incidents, raising serious concerns over press freedom and the...
In a glaring example of development failure, several families residing in Ward No. 9 of Borguri village panchayat, under Sapekhati mouza in the Sonari Assembly constituency of Charaideo district, continue to live without electricity. The area, located near the Assam–Arunachal Pradesh border, remains in darkness despite repeated complaints and the state government's promise of universal household electrification. While the Assam government has consistently claimed that electricity connections have been extended to all rural households under its flagship schemes, the ground reality in Borguri tells a different story. Dozens of families still await basic power supply, which affects not just...
The condition of Nazira’s roads, especially the historic Dhodar Ali, paints a grim picture of neglect and governmental indifference. Once a vital arterial road with historical and economic significance, Dhodar Ali is now in a state of disrepair, causing immense hardship to commuters and residents alike. Despite being a region blessed with abundant natural resources—such as coal, oil, and stone—and housing major public sector institutions like ONGC, Nazira has seen little in terms of real infrastructural development. The promises made by elected representatives and departmental officials have failed to materialize, leading to growing frustration among the public. Repeated protests and...
Nazira, June 27, 2025: The Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC) has achieved a significant milestone by successfully capping Well RDS#147A, effectively resolving a gas leak that began during service operations on June 12, 2025. At dawn, ONGC’s Crisis Management Team (CMT), alongside experts from Cudd Pressure Control and local operations teams, executed a precise operation to remove the damaged Blowout Preventer (BOP) from the wellhead. The team then installed a pre-prepared capping stack, redirecting the gas flow safely and securing the wellhead. The BOP was subsequently closed, halting the gas discharge entirely. This operation, completed without any injuries, fatalities, or...

Nazira, 25 June: The Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) achieved a significant milestone today in its ongoing well control operations at the RDS site, demonstrating resilience and precision amidst mounting environmental challenges. In a carefully coordinated effort, an extra-long boom crane and a 40-ton crane successfully removed 42 tubing stands from the derrick of the rig. This critical step has paved the way for the safe removal of the rig base from the wellhead — a key advancement in the containment process. Following this, the operation now moves to the next phase: dismantling the existing Blowout Preventer (BOP) and installing a capping stack. ONGC has stated that a...
A section of the under-construction junction drain in Nazira town collapsed on June 22, barely 10–12 days after work had begun, raising serious concerns about the quality of construction and misuse of public funds. The incident has exacerbated an already critical situation in Nazira, where residents of Wards 5, 8, and 9 have been battling artificial flooding caused by the municipality’s unplanned drainage systems. Locals have long been demanding a scientifically designed and functional sewerage system, but to no avail. According to sources, the contract for the junction drain was awarded to a BJP worker, further fueling allegations of favoritism and corruption. The construction site...
