Land deal leaves BJP left red faced!

One after another somersault seems to have left BJP leadership red faced. That too hardly a year before the assembly polls.

One after another somersault seems to have left BJP leadership red faced. That too hardly a year before the assembly polls.

Till the other days the state BJP leadership ridiculed chief minister Tarun Gogoi alleging that the land swap deal would reduced the geographical size of Assam. Sensing a hail of controversy and protest, they said that Congress has been trying to surrender before Bangladesh.

Even after Narendra Modi took over as prime minister, state BJP unit burnt Tarun Gogoi and Sonia Gandhi’s effigies in protest against the deal. But Gogoi has been firm on his stand saying that the deal would fetch more plot for the state. But prime minister’s statement has been diplomatic.

When the cabinet dropped Assam from the deal recently Sarbananda Sonowal called it an honour to the sentiments of the people. Thus, charges and counter charges between Congress and BJP leaders left the people in a state of utter confusion.

But minister for external affairs on Wednesday spilled the beans. Moving the amendment bill in the Rajya Sabha, she told parliament that the Indo-Bangla land swap deal would fetched 771 acres of land from Bangladesh while the neighbouring country would get a plot of 267 acres. But an embarrassed BJP state unit president still calls it a move that is detrimental to the interest of the state. How? If it is really against the interest of Assam and its people how the NDA government cleared the decks? Why they had to bank on the support from the Congress? Does it make any sense?
