Assam Legislative Assembly Speaker Pranab Kumar Gogoi will attend the next ‘Guest of the Month’ program of Guwahati Press Club (GPC) on 29 April 2015. The interactive program will begin at 11.30 am and may continue till 1.30 pm. The veteran Congress leader is expected to speak on various burning issues relating to the State. Born in Sivsagar, Speaker Gogoi was involved with the Youth Congress since his early days. He was first elected to Assam Legislative Assembly in 2001 and continued his wining spree in 206 and 2011 Assembly polls. A law graduate, Speaker Gogoi was also president of Sivsagar Bar Association (1998-2002). His hobbies include listening to Classical music as well Assamese songs and he has a special interest on gardening.
Representatives from various indigenous groups and environmental organizations convened in Gangtok, Sikkim, for the North East India Meet on Free Flowing Rivers. The gathering, hosted by the Affected Citizens of Teesta, Centre for Research and Advocacy (Manipur), and the Borok Peoples Human Rights Organization, concluded with a significant resolution aimed at safeguarding the region's rivers and biodiversity.
"We recognize the intrinsic rights of rivers to flow freely and the vital relationship between indigenous communities and their natural resources," emphasized a spokesperson from the conference.
