Chief minister Tarun Gogoi on Sunday underscored the need to bring in innovative legislations, both operational as well as structural in the judiciary to cater to the needs of the society in tune with changing surroundings.
In his address at the Conference of Chief Ministers and Chief Justices of High Courts on Sunday in Delhi, Gogoi outlined a slew of initiatives taken by the state government to strengthen judicial infrastructure and manpower that included sanctioning of 36 new courts, converting 20 ad-hoc fast track courts to regular courts, sanctioning of 54 new fast-track courts for trial of offences against women and doubling the number of courts at subordinate levels.
He said the new infrastructure in place has resulted in the steady decline in the pendency of cases over the years.
According to him, "Pendency of cases is steadily declining even though there is an increase in the institution of fresh cases. This is definitely an encouraging sign.

The Delhi government has agreed to set up a statute of Chaolung Sukapha in the national capital. The assurance came from Delhi Chief minister Sheila Dixit who talked to her Assam counterpart Tarun Gogoi. Before that Gogoi in a letter requested Dixit to consider the proposal to set up the first Ahom king in the national capital. A series of low intensity blasts has forced the security forces to fan in lower Assam on Sunday. Suspected ULFA militants on Saturday night set off eight IED blasts in a space of 90 minutes targeting the house of an AIDUF MLA and crowded markets in Goalpara and Dhubri districts. Over 20 people have been injured when a passenger bus slipped into deep gorge in near Guwahati on Saturday.The accident took place at around 2-30 in the afternoon when the passenger bus was on its way to Kamakhya and suddenly it lost control and fell on a gorge where several people were rescued by police and local residents.
