Centre’s NO to ST status

The centre has rejected the demands for ST status to six ethnic tribes forcing many organizations to hit the streets.

Ministry for tribal affairs sources told Assam Times in New Delhi that after a thorough study the authorities have  rejected the demands ST status for tea garden workers, Ahoms, Koch Rajbanshi, Chutias and Muttocks citing lack of laid down norms.

The decision is set to run into a hail of protest in Delhi and Dispur. The demand was long standing and both Delhi and Dispur have been assuring these ethnic tribes of their due status for the last ten years.

Both Congress and BJP promised S status for the 6 ethnic tribes for overall uplift.

This exposes the governments scandalous motives and false poll promises. This also goes against the spirits of the Pro Talks faction of ULFA , whom the government had promised the STfication of the state .Successive governments have done this and the present has proved that they are no better than the previous.

Boat mishap: 2 killed

Two persons died when a vegetable boat met with a tragic mishap on the river Brahmaputra in Kamrup district on Sunday.It took place in the afternoon when the boat was on its way from Rani Chapori to Garal. There were three persons when the boat met with the tragic mishap because of a severe dust storm. One of them managed to escape death. Two others died and the bodies were fished out on Monday morning by NDRF personnel. 

Dissident MLAs in New Delhi

APCC reiterates gag order

Sarma dares CM on tobacco bill

The war of words between Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and his health minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma takes an interesting turn on Sunday. Dr Sarma virtually dared Gogoi to substantiate the allegations that he was averse to bring the anti-tobacco legislation citing revenue loss. The Chief Minister on Saturday said that he was told that the state would incur revenue loss if a legislation is brought to ban gutkha.

KMSS has elected its leader Akhil Gogoi as new president. Gogoi, the founder of the peasant body was elected at its crucial general meeting in Pathsala on Saturday. Tobacco ignites Gogoi-Sarma difference

Amid conflict between Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and health minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma, the former refused to bring a legislation in the Assam assembly to ban Gutkha.According to Gogoi, it would be more convenient to ban harmful tobacco products under the existing Food Safety Act because the latter had been upheld by courts, including the Supreme Court.It’s a major embarrassment for Dr Sarma who often boasts of his landmark initiative to bring the legislation.

Anup reluctant to join talks!

The much-hyped ULFA government peace process seems to have been depending on Anup Chetia.The ULFA leader is believed to have been averse to join the peace process which is why, he is not in a mood to be repatriated from Bangladesh. Chetia is yet to make his decision formal even after he met two pro talk ULFA leaders in Dhaka last month.  Chetia was urged to withdraw his plea before the Bangladesh  apex court seeking political asylum. Chetia’s reluctance is expected to be a big blow to the peace process.
