Union home minister Rajnath Singh is on a stock taking visit to Assam on Wednesday a day after NDFB-S militants mowed down at least 68 people in Kokrajhar and Sonitpur districts to retaliate the combing operation.
Accompanied by his minister of state Kiren Rijiju, Singh arrived in Guwahati in the evening and attended the unified command meeting with chief minister Tarun Gogoi in Dispur.
Singh is believed to have assured Gogoi of all help to firmly deal with the situation in the two districts. He further urged the chief minister to take strong measures to prevent the violence from spreading to the adjoining areas.
The Centre has already dispatched 5000 additional personnel to take the situation under control. Prime Minister Narendra Modi who spoke to Gogoi over telephone assured him all possible to contain the situation.
Singh and Rijiju are scheduled to visit Kokrajhar and Sonitpur on Thursday to take stock of the situation. Modi has already announced Rs 2 lakh each from the Prime Minister’s Fund to the victims’ family members.
