Dispur steps up welfare activities for the tea garden workers just one and a half year ahead of the 2016 Assembly polls. In a bid to heal the wounds of ration suspension, the Assam government has set up a panel to consider better wage for these people.
A minimum wages advisory board will coordinate the work of the committees and sub-committees set up for tea plantation workers.
sources told Assam Times that during the next 2 years, the board will also examine the report of the committees and also advise the government in matters related to fixation or revision of minimum rate of wages for tea workers.
The board comprises Chief Secretary as Chairman, Commissioner and Secretary for labour and employment as member secretary, and commissioner and secretaries of finance, industry and commerce, Food and civil supplies departments as members.
Employers' representatives in the Board include Presidents/Secretaries of Assam Branch of Indian Tea Association, Tea Association of India, Assam Tea Planters' Association, Bharatiya Chah Parishad and North Eastern Tea Association.
