At least forty people, mostly Adivasi, were killed when suspected NDFB-S militants fired upon the people at two remote villages in Sonitpur district on Tuesday.
The dreaded attack took place at Simangapara near the Paboi reserved forest area bordering Arunachal Pradesh in the evening. Armed militants sneaked into an Adivasi village at around 6 in the evening and started indiscriminate firing where at least 15 people were killed. Then they left the hamlet.
Security forces arrived in the village. But it was too late for them to deal with the militants. Police officials told Assam Times that the attack is being launched to retaliate the intensified offensive by the security forces in several places. In yet another attack, the NDFB-S militants killed at least 5 villagers in Batashipur. It took place simultaneously in the evening.
