Sakela Udhwali in Margherita

Sakela Udhawli, the harvest festival of Khambus was celebrated at Pawai Bongoan, Ketetong near Margheritha in Tinsukia on Monday. Organised by Kirat Rai Mahasabha and supported by Gorkha civil society organisations of the region, the festival began with offering prayers to ancestors and deity followed by Silli group dances.

Khambu youths performed rituals in presence of Mangpa and offered prayers to Paruhaang and Sumnima for well being of the society. Thousands of Khambus being nature worshippers assembled to celebrate the he Sakela which is celebration is a prayer to Mother Nature for healthy crops and protection from natural calamities.

Sakela Udhauli is celebrated in the monrth of Novermber and December suitably after a full moon day which is harvest season, as a part giving thanks to nature for providing them a good harvest.

The open session of the daylong celebration was presided by Siddhiman Thulung while Deo Kumar Rai addressed the Khambus as Key Note Speaker where he spoke at length about Kirat Khambu Rai culture and traditions. Abhijeet Khambu Rai elected General Secretary of Kirat Rai Mahasabha, Assam (KRM,A)  informed the gathering about the mission, vision and current focus of the organisation and its structure.

Convenor of the North East Kirat Rai Sanskritik Sansthan and Central Executive Member of All Assam Gorkha Students Union (AAGSU) Nanda Kirati Dewan graced the occasion as Guest of Honour and said,’The formation of Kirati Rai Mahasabha, Assam  and its maiden Sakela celebrations here is a testimony of amalgamation of Khambus in an organisation to research, study and follow  and most importantly preserve its culture and tradition. The celebrations today is proof of Kirati are indigenous and Sons of the Soil in Assam since time immemorial and deserving Scheduled Tribe of the country.’

‘Development and uplift of tribes like Khambu, Limbu, Tamang, Mangar, Gurung etc. will definitely strengthen the AAGSU ‘, Dewan added calling it Gorkha in Assam today is not just a tribe or caste but it is a composite society a community.

He further stressed that Khambus of Assam should join the national demands of inclusion Khambus of country in central Scheduled Tribe list under article 342 of the Indian Constitution.

Prem Sampang elected president of KRM,A , Former President of Assam Kirat Sammelan Pradip Limboo, Senior Advocate Rajesh Rai, Literaturer Shanta Bahadur Dewan, Sol Bahadur Loh  were some of the invited guests who spoke on the occasion. The cultural evening attraction was kid celebrity singer of the region Nandita Rai and dance performance by Sakela Silli Dance group lead by Rahul Lamsong Rai. Guest Artist s Parashmani Rai  of Zee Bangla famed Sa Re Ga Ma fame from Darjeeling performed in the evening.

Tinsukia tense: Former rebel held after attack on illegal settlers

Concern over illegal coal mining

Despite round-the-clock vigil illegal coal mining and smuggling going on without any hindrance raising doubt over the role of a section of local traders and policemen.  The Margherita unit of the All Tai Ahom Student's Union has expressed grave concern over the unabated illegal coal trading in a number of places in the entire huge area. Talking to Assam Times, local ATASU leaders have alleged that despite restrictions, coal mining activities have been taking place at Aradhora and Namdang Colliery under the North Eastern Coal Fields Coal India Limited.They rued that the district administration has stopped illegal coal mining in many places. Crackdown on Margherita pharmacies

Finally, the authorities have started crackdown on a section of pharmacies for failing to meet the norms in Tinsukia district of Assam.  A team of health department visited a number of pharmacies in Margherita, Ledo and Jagun areas on Saturday.The team comprising drugs inspector Krishna Baishya, drugs officer Rajib Gogoi and deputy drugs controller Hari Chandra Deori gave a surprise visit to a number of nursing homes and pharmacies and examined the documents. Nazrul’s effigy burnt in Ledo

Many organizations in Margherita burnt the effigy of food and civil supply minister Dr Nazrul Islam alleging his failure to rein in the hoarders and black marketers which is why, the price level has been going up. Protest rally in Margherita

Thousands of people took out a rally in Margherita on Saturday in protest against the NDA government’s policy on non Muslim Bangladeshi refugee.  The protestors represented All Assam Muslim Yuba Parishad(S) Margherita Sub Divisional Committee, Margherita Regional Committee and Assam Jatiyotabadi Yuba Chaatra Parishad(AJYCP) Margherita Regional Committee who held a huge rally near the SDO office. NSCN(K) Cadre nabbed

Acting on a tip off Ledo Police nabbed a NSCN(K) cadre from Ledo Railway Station at 2.30 pm on Tuesday. The arrested NSCN(K) Cadre has been identified as Loang Lway (28) who came from Arunachal Pradesh to Ledo to Collect money from businessmen of thsi area, according to the police. Margherita rape: students slam media

The students in Margherita College have slammed the media fraternity for not properly raising the rape and murder case which shocked the entire state last month.The student union President and General Secretary ArjunPradhan and Deepjyoti Gogoi have charged the television channels with downplaying the anger of the people after 4 construction workers raped and killed a college girl near Burma Camp on her way to home."Had it been in New Delhi and Mumbai, the channels would have been highlighting it time and again. Muslim body condemns murder

The All Assam Muslim Yuva Parishad (S) has strongly condemned the Burma Camp incident where four construction workers gangraped and killed a college girl on her way to Margherita last week.AAMYP Vice President Moinur Haque Talukdar told Assam Times said that the need of the hour is to get a new set of laws to expedite the process to give justice to the victims. They further demand that the accused should be hanged to death at the earliest failing which they would intensify the agitation.
