Sakela Udhwali in Margherita

Sakela Udhawli, the harvest festival of Khambus was celebrated at Pawai Bongoan, Ketetong near Margheritha in Tinsukia on Monday. Organised by Kirat Rai Mahasabha and supported by Gorkha civil society organisations of the region, the festival began with offering prayers to ancestors and deity followed by Silli group dances.

Khambu youths performed rituals in presence of Mangpa and offered prayers to Paruhaang and Sumnima for well being of the society. Thousands of Khambus being nature worshippers assembled to celebrate the he Sakela which is celebration is a prayer to Mother Nature for healthy crops and protection from natural calamities.

Sakela Udhauli is celebrated in the monrth of Novermber and December suitably after a full moon day which is harvest season, as a part giving thanks to nature for providing them a good harvest.

The open session of the daylong celebration was presided by Siddhiman Thulung while Deo Kumar Rai addressed the Khambus as Key Note Speaker where he spoke at length about Kirat Khambu Rai culture and traditions. Abhijeet Khambu Rai elected General Secretary of Kirat Rai Mahasabha, Assam (KRM,A)  informed the gathering about the mission, vision and current focus of the organisation and its structure.

Convenor of the North East Kirat Rai Sanskritik Sansthan and Central Executive Member of All Assam Gorkha Students Union (AAGSU) Nanda Kirati Dewan graced the occasion as Guest of Honour and said,’The formation of Kirati Rai Mahasabha, Assam  and its maiden Sakela celebrations here is a testimony of amalgamation of Khambus in an organisation to research, study and follow  and most importantly preserve its culture and tradition. The celebrations today is proof of Kirati are indigenous and Sons of the Soil in Assam since time immemorial and deserving Scheduled Tribe of the country.’

‘Development and uplift of tribes like Khambu, Limbu, Tamang, Mangar, Gurung etc. will definitely strengthen the AAGSU ‘, Dewan added calling it Gorkha in Assam today is not just a tribe or caste but it is a composite society a community.

He further stressed that Khambus of Assam should join the national demands of inclusion Khambus of country in central Scheduled Tribe list under article 342 of the Indian Constitution.

Prem Sampang elected president of KRM,A , Former President of Assam Kirat Sammelan Pradip Limboo, Senior Advocate Rajesh Rai, Literaturer Shanta Bahadur Dewan, Sol Bahadur Loh  were some of the invited guests who spoke on the occasion. The cultural evening attraction was kid celebrity singer of the region Nandita Rai and dance performance by Sakela Silli Dance group lead by Rahul Lamsong Rai. Guest Artist s Parashmani Rai  of Zee Bangla famed Sa Re Ga Ma fame from Darjeeling performed in the evening.

KHANDUBASTI: Army, police and paramilitary forces deployed in search of Arunav Phukan have been concentrating on Khandubasti where suspected ULFA-I rebels are believed to have been hiding with the local BJP leader's son whom they kidnapped on Friday. MARGHERITA: Suspected ULFA-I rebels are believed to have been holding a heavy gunbattle with security forces a day after they kidnapped a local BJP leader's son on Friday. Local residents told Assam Timed that they came to hear the sounds of firing from a sense forest area along the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border. TINSUKIA: After a brief silence Tinsukia erupts in violence where suspected ULFA-I rebels killed a villager and his son on Monday. The incident took place near Bordumsa where a group of armed rebels reached Anteswar Mahanta's residence at around 7 in the evening. Initially, they asked the Mahantas to open the door. TINSUKIA: A villager died and his son sustained serious injury when suspected ULFA(I) attacked their house at a remote hamlet in Tinsukia district on Monday. The incident took place at 6.30 near Bordumsa in the evening when two gun men started indiscriminate firing at Anteswar Mahanta who was at his house premises. Moran died on the spot while his son who was flanked by him sustained serious injury and was rushed to the Assam Medical College Hospital where he is battling for life. Security forces have arrived in the spot and a massive man hunt is going on in search of the gunmen who fled after the attack.
MARGHERITA: A north eastern Bhojpuri peoples' organization has accused a section of people of collecting money from many Hindi speaking people in some pockets in Margherita from inclusion of their names in NRC. A delegation of the Purvottar Bhojpuri Sanmelan led by its president Prem Upadhyay who visited Ledo, Lekhapani, Jagun and the adjoining areas came to know rampant money collection in the name of All Assam Bhojpuri Parishad who are basically a bunch of Congress leaders. Upadhyay demands immediate action against these circle of so called Bhojpuri leaders for collection of cash for NRC.  
TINSUKIA: Only a couple of weeks are left to publish NRC draft across the state. Tinsukia district authority is also gearing up to complete the NRC draft works in time. Those deployed in NRC works have been working overtime to meet the deadline. According to information, the officials have been doing door to door verification under the super vision of magistrate. The district authorities are fully prepared to submit 76,000 forms by December 20---ahead of the deadline to publish the draft. The recent Supreme Court instructions to accept panchayat certificates as supporting documents seems to have helped the NRC officials to expedite the process.
MARGHERITA: Prominent citizen and businessman in Margherita Abhay Paul passed away at a private hospital in Kolkata. Paul, who is associated with many local organizations died of cardiac arrest on Saturday leaving a pall of gloom in the entire locality. Many organizations and individuals have deeply condoled his death and prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul.
MARGHERITA: The Nagorik Surakhya Samity in Margherita on Friday staged a 10 hour hunger strike demanding immediate steps to repair the National Highway No 38 which has been languishing in dire strait for years. The leaders of the local organizations thronged the Borgolai Tiniali in the morning and started sitting on hunger strike for 10 hours. Talking to Assam Talks, Prakash Sarma and Amit Debnath said that despite repeated appeal the authority refused to act. "Now we think the democratic way us the hunger strike. Let's see what is in store" said Sarma. The vital road touches Borgolai, Segunbari and Tirap Colliary where a huge portion is almost non motorable.
