Say no to trafficking and witch hunting

Over the last couple of years, Udalguri has hit media headlines. But for wrong reasons. The district has been bearing  the brunt of witch hunting and human trafficking these days.

The district has become the safe haven for the wtich-hunters and human traffickers exploiting the abject penury and illeteracy of a section of people who have been living in the remote areas.

Now its time to heal the wounds. The cases, mostly, have been registered in Paneri and Dimakuchi police stations where a good number of girls and woman have fallen in the trap. They were often rushed to New Delhi and Haryana luring job.

These have forced the authoritiy and civil society organizations to kick off a massive awareness campaign in Bhergaon against witch hunting and trafficking.

As a part of the programme a legal awareness camp was organized at Paneri MV school on November 16 which was largely attended by people mostly woman belonging to Adivasi and Boro community. AK Bora, District and Session Judge in Udalguri inaugurated the programme at 11 on Sunday.

Bora  stresed measures for curbing social menaces like trafficking and with hunting adding that it was a disquieting signal for the entire state. Mahendra Kalita, Chief Judicial Magistrate of Udalguri attending the rally as the special guest where he said that vested interested people of the villages always try to exploit poor and illiterate people in the society.

Dr.Nirupam Hazarika,SDPO,Bhergaon sub-division spoke on the role of police in fighting witch hunting and illegal trafficking of girls and woman. He requested people to come forward to cooperate with police to book culprits. The awareness rally was also addressed by Keshab Dutta,senior journalist and president of Udalguri District Bar Association; advocate Jayanta Brahma, O.Mije, Judicial Magistrate, M.Khiangte,EAC and i/c DPRO,Udalguri.
