Witch-hunting rattles Kokrajhar; 2 killed

Yet another witch-hunting incident sends no less shock and anger across the state where villagers in Kokrajhar district killed a couple on Monday wee hours. Police, however, arrested three persons in this connection.
The incident took place at No 2 Pulkumari village under Gossaigaon police station where the villagers held a meeting and killed Som Murmu with his wife Fulmani Mardi alleging witchery.   

The couple identified were killed late last night at No.2 Pulkumari village under Gossaigaon police station on suspect of black magic. Police on Monday arrested Hasda, Kistu Besra and Tala Murmu and interrogation is going on.

The incident took place fifteen days after two incidents shocked the entire state. The first incident took place in Karbi Anglong district where villagers tied and tortured a national level athletic Debojani Bora inside a community prayer hall.

On Thursday people in a remote village in Kakopothar tortured three women holding them responsible for the ailment of a teen aged body who later died at the Assam Medical College in Dibrugarh.

Former president of Kokrajhar district unit of Bharatiya Janata Party, Binati Bala Basumatary resigned from her party membership on Monday.  Basumatary submitted her resignation letter to the state party president citating personal reason . She was Kokrajhar district BJP president for 2011-2015, who had gained strength of the party through her strong leadership in the district. Basumatary's quit of the party ahead assembly election would draw a set back party strength in the Kokrajhar. Three cadres of the NDFB(S) were arrested by security forces in a joint operation belonging to police and army at Hakata village under Barama PS in Baksa district on Sunday. The cadres were identified as Jwangsar Boro @ KK, Mohit Mushahary and Pramod Ramchiary @ Khankari @Raja   of Baksa district. They were actively involved in extortion, arms smuggling and other nefarious and anti national activities and Adivasi carnage in December(2014) and had run away and sheltered themselves in Chennai, till their return.
