Glowing tribute to Bezbaruah

It’s a glowing tribute to the Sahityarathi Laxminath Bezbaruah. The state remembered the doyen of the Assamese reciting his O Mur Aapunar Desh by one lakh students in as many as 42 locations on Saturday. Courtesy All Assam Students’ Union (AASU). Inaugurating the 150th birth anniversary of the doyen in Guwahati on Saturday, Dr Amarjyoti Choudhury called a genius who had established Assamese as a modern Indian language rich in its literature. AASU advisor Samujjal Bhattacharyya said that over one lakh students took part in 42 locations across Assam in the simultaneous recitation of his famous poem on Saturday.

Mission Indradhanush begins

The much waited children immunization gets underway on Monday to keep seven dreaded diseases at bay in the state.

Launched under the `Mission Indradhanush, the programme in this phase covers eight districts - Hailakandi, Karimganj, Dhubri, Bongaigaon, Kokrajhar, Goalpara. Darramg and Nagaon.

Health officials in Dispur told Assam Times that the immunization program is covering unvaccinated children below two years.

“It would protect the children from diseases - Diphtheria, Whooping Cough, Tetanus, Polio, Tuberculosis, Measles and Hepatitis B,” said a senior official.

According to information, immunization is taking place in 2,060 places in the eight districts with 300 mobile teams.

Akhil yet to surface

Akhil Gogoi has yet to surfaced as the authorities issued non bailable warrant against the KMSS leader who accused police of raping and killing a women from Meghalaya inside the Dispur police station.
Policemen from Dispur have been looking for the KMSS  leader for the last 48 hours in connection with a case registered against him.
When conducted a search operation at his residence in Candmari, he was not found available on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Notably, he alleged that policemen raped and killed the Meghalaya women inside the police station during the detention period triggering sensation across Assam and Meghalaya.

Two NDFB cadres arrested at Khoirabari

Acting on a tip off, two NDFB cadres conducting extortion in village Khagrabari of Udalguri District on 16 Apr 2010, troops of 315 Field Regiment (KARGIL) from the Borengajuli Army Camp acted with speed and nabbed the two cadres namely Sukhram Boro of Naokata village alongwith an accomplice. NDFB extortion pads were recovered from the extortionists alongwith two country made pistols. The duo were working for the NDFB (anti talks faction) and had been conducting extortion in the areas of Bhergaon, Tangla, Dimakuchi and Khairabari for a long time. The arrest of these cadres has sent a wave of relief amongst the people of Khagrabari. The duo have been handed over to the police for further investigation.
