American Center Director visits Guwahati

American Center Director & Public Affairs Officer Joanne "JJ" Joria was on a 2 day visit to Guwahati. During her August 28, 29 stay she visited the American Corner which is the American Library Kolkata's northeast resource center. The center jointly set up by the U.S. Consulate, Kolkata and the Darwin School of Business was inaugurated on February 25, 2012 by Ambassador Peter Burleigh.

The American Corner provides current and reliable information about the United States and communicates diverse academic information essential for students, teachers, professionals and others. The information outpost is a tool for expanding knowledge on the United States for the people of northeast India. Currently, it has a collection of about 1500 books, in addition to DVDs and periodicals on American English, education in the United States, U.S. history, political and social sciences, environment and travel. In addition the American Corner also has a growing collection of children andyoung adult books, DVDs and periodicals. Over 130 members use this corner for their academic, professional and leisure interests.

As part of her educational outreach JJ Joria enjoyed her engagement with the students of Handique Girls College, Don Bosco School and Maharishi Vidya Mandir where she spoke to the students on opportunities for higher education in the United States.

She also meet with the local alumni of various U.S. Department of State funded exchange programs including those of the International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) and local NGO representatives. Joria concluded her visit with an interaction with the media fraternity.

Fire breaks out in Guwahati's economic hub at New Market in Fancy Bazaar creating utter havoc and fear. A towering inferno gutted the area and as many as 30 LPG cylinders have gone up in flames so far. Camera traps installed in the Rajiv Gandhi Orang National Park in Mangaldoi in Assam helped convict two poachers for illegal entry into the park with arms and killing rhinos. The North East Youth Festival in Majuli concluded on Sunday after the state government was slammed for lack of cooperation. The Union ministers who graced on the occasion came down heavily on Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and his government alleging that they did not want the event to take place. “I find it quite strange to have seen that not even a single minister or MLA attended the regional event.
