Workers call off strike

Contractual workers engaged in the 750 MW (3 X 250 MW) Bongaigaon Thermal Power Project (BgTPP) today  suspended after 2 pm their indefiniate hunger strike till July 28 as BgTPP authority and district administration assured to meet solutions of their issues.

The contractual workers staged hunger strike since 9 am in the morning in protest against the decision of the BgTPP authority to recruit new employees against their post avoiding the existing workers and against anti-local policies, but later strike was suspended till July 28 following assured from BgTPP authority and district administration who were visited the strike spot at Salakati by 2 pm.

The contractual workers alleged that the authority has “totally ignored” the local contractual workers who have been part of the project since the very beginning of the project and issued call letters to candidates for recruitment to the posts of Assistant Store Trainee and Account Assistant Trainee to be held on July 20.

Dansrang Basuamatary, who is working at Contract and Materials (C&D) an employed by Utility Power Tech Limited (UPL), said that many contractual workers had been working in different sectors in the power project since the past 6–7 years and had become skilled in their respective fields. But the BgTPP authority invited fresh candidates through employment exchange for a written examination to be held on July 20 for the posts of Assistant Store Trainee and Accounts (Assistant) Trainee in C&D sector.
