Khagen Mahanta cremated

The mortal remains of Khagen Mahanta consigned to flames on Friday a day after the folk song exponent passed away at his own residence in Guwahati.

His son Angarag Mahanta lit the funeral pyre at a plot adjacent to the Sankardev Kalakhetra in presence of thousands of bereaved people in the afternoon.

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, social welfare minister Akon Bora, forest minister Rockybul Hussain, cultural affairs minister Pranati Phukan, Guwahati MP Bijoya Chakravartty were prominent among those who attended the funeral.

Before that his body was taken from his residence to the Seuj Sangha who he set up a few decades ago in Ambikagiri Nagar.

Then it was kept at the Ravindra Bhawan premises for four hours to fecilitate the people to pay their last respect to the cultural icon.

The United Liberation Front of Assam (I) handed down the death penalty to two of its cadres for their alleged involvement with espionage. In a press communique, the outlawed outfit said that its two cadres, Sanjiv Sarma and Dhanjit Das, were found to be involved in espionage. Guwahati: The United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA-I) has alleged a nefarious conspiracy by police and the army to crush their spine, engaging a section of youths who were dispatched to the jungles to join the rebel outfit. In a statement sent to media,  the proscribed outfit claimed to have caught the conspiracy as they grilled a youth from Baihata Chariali in Kamrup who recently joined the outfit.  They have published a list of youths who were trained to target the outfit.. The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) has refuted reports that some more leaders would soon desert the party. According to some reports, among others,  former minister and MP Prodyut Bordoloi, former minister and MLA Rockeybool Hussain, and former minister Bismita Gogoi would quit the party at any time.
