Award for Gauhati University

Gauhati University, the oldest higher educational institution in the NE region, has been awarded the European Awards for Best Practices 2014 by the European Society for Quality Research (ESQR) on 1st June 2014 in a gala event at hotel Le Plaza in Brussels, Belgium. Vice Chancellor of the University Dr. Mridul Hazarika was present at the Convention and award giving ceremony along with 73 participants of 59 countries. It is notable that Gauhati University is the only University from India to get this honour. The European Award for Best Practices recognizes the outstanding commitment, support and results in quality management strategies both in large companies/ organizations, public administrations and medium/ small sized enterprises/ organization. Vice Chancellor Dr. Hazarika also delivered a speech about the activities and new initiatives taken in the Gauhati University both in administration and academic in the Award ceremony.

European Society for Quality Research (ESQR) is an organization, with Head Office in Lausanne (Switzerland), dedicated to quality improvement techniques recognition and research. It makes contribution to quality culture through its annual conventions and award giving ceremonies in the major European cities. It recognizes excellence, disseminates innovation and visionary thinking, spreads knowledge, shares conformity assessment practices and facilities networking. The award is an honour and recognition to the University for the Consistence Approach towards the development and diffusion of higher education in a remote region like North East India.

The Vice Chancellor of Gauhati University Dr. Mridul Hazarika, who also a scientist of repute in the field of quality production of Tea and its related areas has earned another recognition as “The Name in Science’ by the European Business Assembly, Oxford, UK in the last part of April this year. The recognition is given on the basis of actual existence of scientific developments, their economic efficiency, loyalty to the integration transfer and participation in the International symposia and conferences etc.

The much-hyped efforts for preservation of ancient monuments seems to have failed to reach a section of people. A section of these must-see monuments is languishing in dying agony. That too in the heart of Guwahati city. The example may be made of the Ugratara temple and the Jorpukhuri beside it. The things have reached such a paralyzing extent that a circle of conscious citizens in Guwahati has to write to the district authorities for intervention. Here is an excerpt of a letter written to Deputy Commissioner by Dr Satyakam Phukan demanding immediate intervention to preserve the age old temple and twin tanks teeming with turtles.

Information Forum, umbrella organization of RTI activists of Assam, staged protest in front of the Morigaon district Deputy Commissioner office on Saturday, demanding arrest of the killer of Atikur Rahman, an RTI activist of Lahorighat locality of Morgaon district. Rahman’s body with injure marks on head was recovered on January 15 in a remote road side area of Lahorighat. His family alleged that some influential people were behind his murder as he continued fight against corruption of local PRI system. The was stated in a press release.          
A five-day event “Festival of Tibetan Art and Culture” will be held at the Kalakshetra Guwahati from February 2-6, 2014. His Holiness the Dalai Lama will be present on the occasion. Pongyong Tekchai, a collection of articles, written by noted  writer Rajiv Ahmed and published by Sampriti Prakashan, was released on Mondy at a  function organised in Guwahati Press club. The book was inaugurated by senior journalist Hyder Hussain and the meeting was presided over by veteran journalist Dhirendranath Chakarvorty. Inagurating the book journalist Hussain hoped that the book will able to feed up the needs of voracious readers’ community of Assamese language.
