Over 80% turn out in Lakhimpur

Amid tight security arrangement, voting in the first phase of Lok Sabha election has come to an end in Lakhimpur on Monday. The voting which began at 7 in the morning ended at 5 in the afternoon. The turn out is believed to have crossed a huge 80 per cent.

But some booths had to extended the voting hour till 5-30 due to some technical reasons. Around 14,24,008 voters peacefully exercised their franchise to decide on the fate of 13 candidates which is sealed in the EVMs.

Long queues of voters were seen in front of the polling booths from early in the morning. Polling took place at 1,921 booths from 7 in the morning to 5 in the afternoon in all the booths simultaneously.

Union minister Ranee Narah seeks fresh mandate to lock in a keen contest with BJP state president Sarbananda Sonowal.

AGP candidate Hari Prasad Dihingia is no less popular in some pockets. Tight security arrangement is in place at all polling booths to ensure free and fair polls on Monday. The counting will take place on May 16.

Renowned vaishnavite veteran Sonaram Chutia passed away after a brief ailment on Wednesday. Chutia died at the Jorhat Medical College Hospital at 9.15 in the evening. He was 98 and was accorded with cabinet rank 3 years back. Born on June 8 in 1915, Chutia cleared his graduation in science from Cotton College. In major breakthrough, Dhemaji police intercepted a truckload of IMFL coming from Arunachal Pradesh suspected to be distributed among the voters just before the polling of panchayat elections.The truck carrying 4000 litres of IMFL in bottles were seized by the excise department at Laluk last night by the district administration.The truck driver claimed that the liquor bottled at Naharlagun in Arunachal Pradesh and were being transported to that state's East Siang district through the only road between the two places which runs through Lakhimpur district.
Karimganj police on Wednesday confirmed the arrest of a youth for torturing a five-year-old girl. The five-year-old girl, who went missing on January 28 evening, was found lying in a paddy field with severe injuries near her house at Pinnagar village on January 29. Her father alleged that she was raped by the youth, who was arrested by the police on the basis of the allegation. Barring a few stray incidents polling for the first phase of panchayat election are over registering a huge turn out in 8 districts on Wednesday.The polling began at 7 in the morning and ended at 3 in the afternoon where 28,680 candidates are in the fray in eight districts. Among them, 643 have contested for the post of zilla parishad member, 2,801 for anchalik panchayat member, 3,099 for gaon panchayat president's post and 22,137.The first phase include Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Jorhat, Sivasagar, Golaghat, Kaliabor, Nagaon Sadar, Lakhimpur and Dhemaji districts.

ULFA has owned up the responsibility of the strike in oil pipeline at Makum on Tuesday. Security forces claimed to have killed a hardcore ULFA militant following a heavy exchange of firing in Goalpara district on Tuesday.The encounter took place in early in the morning at Khardang near Dudhnoi bordering Meghalaya where the ULFA militant was killed to be later identified as Niyar Asom.
