Waiting for Rahul Gandhi

Amid a massive security arrangement, people thronging in thousands in Biswanath Chariali to attend Rahul Gandhi’s rally on Monday.

Security forces are fanning across the district to thwart any move by NDFB-S militants to disrupt Gandhi’s poll rally to campaign for Tezpur party candidate Bhupen Bora.

Senior party leaders told Assam Times that security forces are guarding hundreds of buses deployed by the party to ferry people to the rally at the Kamala Kanta Khetra.

Gandhi is scheduled to arrive in Tezpur at 11 in the morning. Then he would straightly leave for Biswanath Charilai to hold the rally. He would fly to Dibrugarh at 1-30 in the afternoon.      

Massive security arrangement is required in the entire district in view of NDFB-S militants’ 12 hour bandh to oppose Rahul Gandhi’s visit.

Rahul's rally in Assam is equally important. He has been strength of congress party and he has given its party a breakthrough. His efforts were transformed into actions.

One can see that Rahul Gandhi's popularity is rising day by day. He is very much popular among the young generation and also among the people at the grassroot level. He is putting good efforts in reaching out to people.

5 killed in Dergaon mishap

Five persons of a family were killed at a tragic rad mishap in Dergaon sending shockwaves across the state on Wednesday.It took place at Balijan on the National Highway No 37 when a vehicle carrying five women and kid rammed into a tree at around 12 in the afternoon.Four women and the kid were killed on the spot. Come Thursday. Smokeless tobacco would not be available across the state. The Bill to ban sale, transport, display, consume and advertise smokeless tobacco will come into force.Governor JB Patnaik has given his consent to the much-hyped bill cleared by the House in the winter session.  The government is clearing the decks to strictly enforce the law after the legislation received ascent from the Governor.Days are not far when the government will bring yet another legislation to ban smoking tobacco to deal with the impending health hazard in the state. This was what health minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma told reporters in the Assam Assembly premises.

Anti-tobacco bill turns into law

The much-hyped anti-tobacco bill is all set to become a historic law in the state from Thursday.Disclosing this, health minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma told the Assembly on Wednesday that the bill to ban sale and consumption of tobacco across the state has already got governor’s ascent.Now the bill is all set to become law from Thursday. The Assam Assembly will clear the formalities to ban sale and consumption of tobacco across the state.   

Trader escapes from captivity

A businessman managed to escape in Karbi Anglong district from the kidnappers two days after he was whisked away at gunpoint.Identified as Bijoy Das, the wine shop owner has reached his home at Rajapara on Wednesday wee hours giving a sign of relief to his family members and relatives.He is understood to have escaped from his captivity in Dhansila. He was kidnapped on Monday by a few gunmen forcing police to launch an intensive operation in the area.    

One horn terror in Koliabor

Rhino terror refuses to die down. A strayed rhino seems to have been unleashing terror in Kaliabor area on Wednesday a day after one person was killed in rhino attack in Majuli.Local villagers in Koliabor in the outskirt of the Kaziranga National park spotted the one horn animal at an open paddy field in Kuwalitul in the morning. They informed it to the forest department where officials arrived in the field to disperse the animal which could not sneak into the human habitat.

HS Exam begins

Assam Higher secondary examination begins in science, arts and commerce streams on Wednesday.According to the Assam Higher Secondary Education Council over 2,54,000 candidates are appearing  this year in 792 centres across the state.The council has set up special committee in the district level to ensure free and fair examination.Over 2,000 officials have been deployed to deal with anomalies and irregularities. Barring a few anomalies, the examinations are going on peacefully.   The High School Leaving Certificate Examination is also scheduled to begin on Thursday.
