Karbi festival going on

With much fanfare and cultural extravaganza, the colourful Karbi Youth festival is going on atop the Karbi hills. The colourful cultural event of the Karbi youths was inaugurated by Assam Governor Lt general (retd) Ajoy Singh on Saturday. The event marked its beginning with a glowing tribute to the Karbi culture legend Rangsina Sarpo. In his address, the Governor said he was really mesmerized by the Karbi songs and dance adding that has turned 75 but never did he enjoy these cultural festival. In his address, veteran Karbi political leader Dr Jayanta Rongpi said only autonomous state could restore permanent peace and prosperity in the hills district.

Saw Assam Times for the first time today and found this piece of news on Karbi youth Festival. The effort to host a people's paper is really praiseworthy. I am definitely one of your many well-wishers and would be glad to see this effort grow everyday. Since you have given a reader this unique opportunity to also comment on the news items appearing here, I would only suggest to kindly get the names (particularly Karbi and other tribal names) correctly. For example, the name of Rangsina Sarpo is written in this news item as Sargot..which is wrong and I hope you wouldn't want to go on unmindful of such mistakes! Please kindly ask your reporters to be cautious on such sensitive matters. With best wishes.....DST

Blast in Bijni: 1 child killed and 3 others seriously injured

In a powerful bomb blast one 5 year old child Alima Khatun (age 5) was died on the spot at Koilagaon under Bijni Amguri in Chirang District at around 12:20 PM on 29-04-08. Alima was playing along with the other children in front a house after they arrived from their schools while that tragic incident took place. Fake medicine recovered

Huge contingent of fake medicine has been seen at the Dispur Police Station which was recovered by the city police from a rented house at Jonaki Path area near Down Town Hospital on 27-04-08. Civilian killing: AASU protest spills to roads

Peace process set to revive as Dr Goswami meets Guv

Peace negotiator and writer Mamoni Roisom Goswami is hopeful of reviving the peace process while she called on Assam Governor Lt General (Retd) Ajoy Kumar Singh on Tuesday evening. Peace process: Goswami to meet Governor today

Peace broker and award winning writer Indira Goswami will call on Assam Governor Lt general retd) Ajoy Kumar Singh on Tuesday in a bid to carry forward the peace process in view of ULFA’s recent willingness for talks.According to information, the former professor of Delhi University who has been trying to ensure government-ULFA negotiation will hold talk with the Governor at around 6-30 in the evening at the Raj Bhawan.ULFA supreme Paresh Baruah expressed his willingness to carry forward the peace process when he talked to Dr Goswami over telephone on April 14.
