Guwahati: The much-hyped Congress-AIUDF alliance to beat BJP in 2021 assembly polls hits a major road block when a recent AICC survey suggested otherwise.
The survey has predicted the dismal performance of the party in 2021 assembly polls and that the party would be decimated in upper Assam if the party openly strikes an alliance with AIUDF. But it would help the grand old party consolidate the minority votes in lower and central Assam zones.
The survey further suggested a secret alliance just before the polls in lower Assam, central Assam and Barak valley. But in Barak valley, the senior Congress leaders have been opposing such deal with AIUDF.
The survey further suggested an alliance with small forces or parties. It further suggested the fielding of young candidates in the assembly polls in 2021. If these suggestions are considered, more than a dozen senior leaders including former CM Tarun Gogoi would have to opt-out of the race.
Notably, former CM Gogoi and state Congress president Ripun Bora have been strongly advocating an alliance with AIUDF and the party under the leadership of perfume baron Badaruddin Ajmal given hint of an alliance on a number of occasions.
