In yet another incident of human-elephant conflict, two persons lost their lives in the Goalpara district of Assam today.
Bhaturam Rabha (45) and Mithun Mallick (22) had been trampled by wild pachyderm at Govindpur in Rangagara. Residents say that the two were trampled by a loner elephant.
A week ago, one Dilip Das lost his life in a similar incident at Mornoi in Goalpara.
The Goalpara district has become a hot spot of frequent human-elephant interaction over the years. Clearing of forests and destruction of the elephant corridors for cashew plantations, rubber plantations and other developmental activities in the Assam-Meghalaya border are drivers of human-elephant conflict manifesting in crop-raiding, damage to property and loss of human and elephant lives in the district.
