Tarun Gogoi dead

Guwahati: Veteran Congress leader and former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi is dead. He passed away in the evening at Guwahati Medical College Hospital where he was undergoing treatment of post COVID complications.

His condition deteriorated on Saturday as his organs did not properly respond to the line of treatment.

Assam defies diktat, observes R Day

Defying rebel diktat tricolour is fluttering in the sky of Assam to mark the country’s Republic Day on Thursday. Amid unprecedented security measures Assam governor B Purohit unfurled the tricolour and took salute of the march pass of army, police, para military forces and NCC at the Veterinary playground in Khanapara. Two Padma awards for Assam

Noted space scientist Dr Jitendranath Goswami and eminent litterateur and lyricst Eli Ahmed fetched no less pride to Assam with Padma award. The Centre announced the covered civil award for the duo on the eve of the Republic Day on Wednesday. Former Lok Sabha Speaker and NPP founder PA Sangma is the recipient of Padma Vivushan award. Sangma, the strong Garo man who died last year is the first in the north eastern region to have received the country’s second top civilian award.

Operation after ambush

Security forces start fanning in Jagun area in search of ULFA-I and NSCN-K a day after the dreaded rebels killed three Assam Rifles jawans at an ambush.Army, police and para military forces have cordoned off a huge area conducting a combing operation against the rebels behind the ambush on Sunday morning.According to reports, at least 40 ULFA-I and NSCN-K rebels have been camping in upper Assam to disrupt the Republic Day celebrations on Thursday. Jagun toll goes up to 3

One more Assam Rifles jawan succumed to injuries in Sunday’s rebel attack in Tinsukia district. He was declared dead on Sunday night 12 hours after he was rushed to the hospital. Two others died a couple of hours after a joint team of ULFA-I and NSCN-K rebels ambushed a vehicle of Assam Rifles escorting a team of foreign tourists at Jagun in the morning.
