Tarun Gogoi dead

Guwahati: Veteran Congress leader and former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi is dead. He passed away in the evening at Guwahati Medical College Hospital where he was undergoing treatment of post COVID complications.

His condition deteriorated on Saturday as his organs did not properly respond to the line of treatment.

Gautom Roy grilled

An anti corruption unit of Assam police grilled Gautom Roy on Monday in connection with the Rs 2000 crore scam in the social welfare department during the erstwhile Tarun Gogoi government.As directed, the former social welfare minister reached the anti corruption and vigilance cell office in Rupnagar at 10 in the morning to be grilled by a team of officers for a couple of hours.Roy was summoned a week after the team grilled Akon Bora, who was social welfare minister when the multi crore scam took place.

Uproar in the Assam assembly

Assam legislative assembly got underway in Dispur amid a story note on Monday. Opposition Congress and AIUDF did not allow governor Banwarilal Purohit to complete his speech to mark the start of the session which will end in March. Budget session begins

The Assam assembly has begun its budget session on Monday with Governor Banwarilal Purhit’s address outlining the major thrust of the Sarbananda Sonowal government. Before that the House unanimously elected Hiten Goswami as the Speaker following the exit of Ranjit Das, who took over as Assam BJP state president. During this 19 day long business session, finance minister Himanta Biswa Sarma will table the state budget 2017-2018 on February 7. Gadkari pledges connectivity boost

Union surface transport minister Nitin Gadkari on Sunday announced 1253 km in the National Highway in a bid to bridge the yawning communication gap of Assam with the rest of the country. Budget session begins tomorrow

Assam assembly will begin its budget session on Monday which is expected to be a stormy one in view of the Opposition’s plan to corner the BJP-led government. Assam governor Banwarilal Purhit will open the session with his address at nine in the morning. Finance minister Himanta Biswa Sarma will table the annual budget next week. Mobile theatre pioneer dead

Ratan Lahkar is mo more. The harbinger of Assamese mobile theatre is dead. The famed theatre maker who heralded a new era in theatre passed away on Sunday noon after prolonged illness leaving the people in a state of utter shock. Various organizations and individuals thronged his residence at Pathsala in Barpeta district to pay their last respect to the lifeless theatre personality.
