Manipur: two cops suspended

IMPHAL: Manipur Home Department has on Thursday placed a sub-inspector and a constable under suspension in connection with a melee wherein several student members were brutally beaten up by cops during a protest here on Monday.

Activists of Democratic Students’ Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) were attempting to storm the Manipur BJP head office and Governor’s bungalow on July 16 demanding immediate sacking of Manipur University Vice Chancellor Adya Prasad Pandey.

Seven members of the alliance, including its general secretary Shital Oinam, were injured when police attacked them in their bid to defuse the situation.

Chief Minister N Biren Singh visited DESAM leader Shital at Raj Medicity here. He was accompanied by Deputy CM Y Joykumar Singh and other cabinet ministers.

On the sidelines, Biren told journalists that the medical expenses of the injured students would be borne by the state government.

In a query the Chief Minister informed that a sub-inspector and a constable of Manipur Police have been placed under suspension in connection with the incident after the video clippings of the incident was analysed.

Biren said if found guilty, Vice Chancellor of Manipur University AP Pandey will naturally be removed. He said the inquiry committee will now probe the allegations levelled against Prof Pandey.

He also mentioned limitations of the state government in handling the crisis surrounding Manipur University which is a central institute.

Prof Pandey is facing allegations of financial and administrative irregularities. Manipur University Students’ Union (MUSU) supported by other organisations has demanded his removal. The union launched a protest over the pressing demand since June 31 last leaving the varsity completely paralysed.
