AASU press meet on Implementation of Clause 6 of the Assam accord constituted at Swahid Nyas Bhavan,Guwahati on August 11, 2020

New Delhi: Noted journalist, columnist Sanjoy Hazarika said that the debate and dialogue on Clause VI need to be conducted with respect and “not lead to social media abuse or prejudice or make a complex situation more difficult.”

Talking to Assam Times, Hazarika, who is also the Director of the Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative (CHRI) said, “the simple thing for the Centre to decide -- and I am referring to the GoI and not any particular party or coalition -- is will it stand judicial scrutiny because it is bound to be challenged in the courts and could lead to an even more convoluted and protracted process?  Will it stand the test of Constitutional validity?  Those are the key questions that I am sure that the GoI and MHA are grappling with as we should also.”

“That is probably why the MHA representative did not sign the document. The CM's response that this has complicated matters and is unfortunate at this time should be noted. It is good that it will be debated publicly so that all groups can present their points of view,” said Hazarika.
