Handlooms bring hope to Lengopara artisans

Guwahati, 22 February 2021: Bosco Reach Out, a Guwahati based rural development NGO distributed 80 handlooms and accessories for trained artisans at Lengopara area in Goalpara district of Assam, 22 February 2021.

The distribution programme was part of BRO’s on ongoing project SFRUTI supported by Ministry of Micro Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME), Govt. of India. 

“We have distributed 80 Jacqard looms and accessories among the beneficiaries for their income generating activities to ensure their sustainable livelihood,” says BRO Executive director Fr. A. Jayaprakash.

He urged recipients to work hard and produce quality product to achieve the objectives of the project.

The participants were delighted and optimistic regarding their goal and responsibilities to make the project successful.   

BRO Administrator Mr. Ghanashyam Pathak, explained about product diversification and value addition emphasising on skill up-gradation of the artisans to sustain in the market. 

Government’s MSME project aims to develop the artisan cluster in rural areas across the country to revive our indigenous activity. 

The main deliverables of this project is to up-grade skills of the artisans and to provide them modern tools and amenities to scale up their productions with quality. 

Artisans are also clubbed into groups so that risk factors of the business can be minimized and investment capabilities to the business become easier through their contributions. 

Bosco Reach Out established in 1983 is an non-profit, non-political and non-religious organization. It is the official social development wing of the Salesian Province of Guwahati in North East India committed to the integral and holistic development of the human person.

Varsity helps girls learn skills to be self-reliant

University departments in northeast India have ventured into job-oriented training program for educated unemployed youth of its neighbourhood. Into the second year, the Swabalamban program this year has 40 per cent girl students registering for skills training once considered boys only domain. A group of Mass Communication students doing courses in radio production and development communication found that community radio has power to create awareness in the community for change. Motivated by their teachers, they explored the needs of neighbourhood communities and came up with radio magazine shows to highlight some of the social issues that vexed the villagers. A university community in northeast India has become a trend setter in offering development communication services when its students of the Schools of Technology and Social Sciences decided to reach out to its neighbourhod communities. A group of university students discussed Media, Culture and Society in the context of current national media scenario at Assam Don Bosco University (ADBU) Azara campus.
