GU Vice Chancellor inaugurated India-Taiwan Global Bamboo webinar

An International Webinar Series -2 on the Theme: "Bamboo: a potential resource for the uplifting rural economy in post-COVID pandemic situation in Northeast Inda” was held on 10th July 2020 organised by “2020 INDIA TAIWAN GLOBAL BAMBOO TECH FORUM” in association with Gauhati University, Assam and Japan Bamboo Society as Knowledge partners. This was an initiative of SABF and National Cheng Chung University, Taiwan to expand bamboo cooperation and develop the bamboo industry towards achieving the SDG of United nations globally. The Webinar was started with the welcome speech by Dr. Long-Chuan Lu, Professor, Marketing and Director, Marketing Strategy and Innovation Research Centre, National Chung Cheng University, Taiwan and Mr. Kamesh Salam, Founder, World Bamboo Day and Executive Director, South Asia Bamboo Foundation. he Webinar was inaugurated by Prof. Pratap Jyoti Handique, Vice Chancellor, Gauhati University where he emphasized on sustainable use of bamboo resources in post-COVID situation. Dr. Shibata SHOZO, Chief Director of Japan Bamboo Society, Professor, Graduate School of Global Environmental Studies, Graduate School of Agriculture; Kyoto University, Japan delivered the keynote speech. Among the key panellists, Dr. Bhaben Tanti, Professor, Department of Botany and Director, Internal Quality Assurance Cell, Gauhati University introduced the webinar and highlighted the potentiality of bamboo resources in the “Atmanirbhar Rojgar Abhyan”, Govt. of India to generate employment for youth through entrepreneurship and industrial associations.

Prof. Alak Kumar Buragohain, Former Vice Chancellor, Dibrugarh University and Chairperson-Academics, Royal Global University highlighted in details regarding the importance of bamboo mapping and value addition in post COVID situation in NE India. The deliberations made by other key panellists were Prof. Amar Yumnam, Development and Institutional Economist, Manipur University; Mr. STS Lepcha (Retd. IFS), Former PCCF and presently Member of the National Bamboo Mission, Govt. of India; Mr. Parikshit Borkotoky, Managing Director, Kraftinn Home Décor India Pvt Ltd. highlighted different issues related to bamboo based trade and industries.

Mr. Kamesh Salam, Chairman of the Webinar highlighted in details about the bamboo status in Japan, Taiwan, Chaina, Thailand and India and the possible opportunity in Northeast India. Finally, the panellist have concluded with a massage to the government and different stockholders about reviving livelihoods of Bamboo sector of the NE States of India and its crucial factors after the Post -COVID 19. More than 1000 participants from various parts of India, Taiwan, and South Asia were attended the webinar. The entire programme was moderated by Miss Jo-Chih Wang, Specialist, CCU USR Bamboo and Bamboo Charcoal Innovation Project, National Chung Cheng University, Taiwan.
