Bikaner hosts Maru Manthan, the desert forum from Feb 13

Bikaner, February 11: Desert Resource Center, Urmul Group, is organising Maru Manthan, the desert forum amidst the sand dunes of Bajju, Bikaner, Rajasthan. The first of its kind forum for celebrating the uniqueness and emerging dynamics of hot and cold deserts around the world, the festival will be held on 13-14 February, 2021.

Anshul Ojha, Founder Director, Desert Research Center said, “As a festival, Maru Manthan will facilitate a space where desert communities, academics, civil society groups, policy makers and media gatekeepers will get together to share their experiences and celebrate their cultures. The festival, as a shared forum, will advance dialogue on innovations and alternatives around life in the desert and its relationship to desert ecology.”

Deserts are unique in their fabric and being. Maru Manthan is a vision to celebrate this uniqueness and provide a glimpse of the complexities that life among the sand dunes.

“With panel sessions, craft exhibits and inauguration of a camel milk center, this 2-day event pays tribute to the rhythm of life in the deserts and among desert dwellers. It is a homage to resilience, jubilations and innovations amidst living in a harsh environment with its challenges and scarcities”, Ojha said.

“As a space co-created with the desert communities from Rajasthan and elsewhere, Maru Manthan aims to collectively work towards enhancing an information regime and debate to help public policy around social, cultural, economic and environmental aspects of life in the desert. The festival hopes to act as a catalyst in a change-making process in which desert communities are actively involved in decisions about their lives and their futures” Ojha added.

The key panelists include Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) representative in India Tomio Shichiri, National Rainfed Area Authority (NRAA) Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Ashok Dalwai.

ARSU protest disrupts train services

Normal train services remained heavily disrupted in Goalpara and Kamrup districts on Tuesday when ARSU activists blocked the roads in protest against holding of panchayat elections in Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council areas. Hundreds of ARSU activists blocked rail tracks at several places in Goalpara and Kamrup districts to protest holding of panchayat elections in villages which fall under RHAC areas. ULFA claims responsibility of explosion

ULFA has owned up the responsibility of the strike in oil pipeline at Makum on Tuesday. In a statement, the outfit claimed to have used PMTD technology to blow up the oil pipeline which took place on Tuesday morning. Security forces cordoned off the entire area to nab the militants for several hours.

ULFA man killed in encounter

Security forces claimed to have killed a hardcore ULFA militant following a heavy exchange of firing in Goalpara district on Tuesday.The encounter took place in early in the morning at Khardang near Dudhnoi bordering Meghalaya where the ULFA militant was killed to be later identified as Niyar Asom. A pistol along with a magazine and several rounds of bullets. Two army jawans have also been injured in the encounter who have been rushed to the hospital.    

Extradition signed but uncertainty still on Chetia

Campaigning ends for panchayat polls

Campaigning for the first phase of panchayat polls ends. Polls will tae place Wednesday. The first phase will decide the fate of altogether 28,680 candidates in eight districts. Of them, 643 candidates will contest for the post of Zilla Parishad member, 2,801 for Anchalik Panchayat member, 3,099 candidates for Gaon Panchayat president's post and 22,137 candidates filed their nominations for Gaon Panchayat membership. First phase will include Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Jorhat, Sivasagar, Golaghat, Kaliabor, Nagaon Sadar, Lakhimpur and Dhemaji districts. The counting of votes would take place on February 14 and February 15.

Assam biologist undertakes training in Cambodia on Greater Adjutant Stork conservation

GoM to look into NDRF, SDRF

The Assam government has set up a group of ministers to look into the issue of inclusion of erosion as an eligible calamity for relief under National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF) or State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF).Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi conveyed to Union Minister of Agriculture & Food Processing Industries Sharad Pawar recently.Gogoi wrote a letter to Pawar requesting him to include river bank erosion in the list of eligible natural calamities for assistance from NDRF/SDRF.The GOM is being serviced by Ministry of Home Affairs.
