Bank Engine collides with Sealdah-Kanchanjunga Express at Badarpur station

Badarpur: In a shocking incident, at least 15 passengers were injured after the Sealdah-Kanchanjunga Express met with an accident at the Badarpur railway station. Police said that among the injured, five of the passengers were critically injured and have been rushed to Railway Hospital. Unfortunately among the gravely injured are a pregnant woman and a child.

According to sources within the railway, a preliminary investigation by the railway department has revealed that the accident took place due to the negligence of the Loco Engine Center. Rajiv Kumar, in-charge of the Locomotive section has been suspended immediately after the incident.

Reportedly, S Umesh, Area Manager of the Badarpur Sub Division, NF Railway, reached Badarpur Railway Station immediately after receiving the news of the accident. The medical team arrived immediately at the railway station following the accident in order to attend the injured passengers. Injured passengers were given first aid while drinking water was provided to the injured passengers by the railway authorities.

According to the reported details of the incident, the Agartala-Sealdah Kanchanjunga Express train entered Badarpur station on Thursday. Rajiv Kumar started the process to install the banking engine on the train. The train was standing on platform 1 after entering Badarpur station and waiting for the banking engine to be attached. But, the shunter could not control the speed of the engine and hit the halted train resulting in a serious impact. The car guard brakes were severely damaged due to the impact. Several passengers fell from the upper berth as the parked train was hit hard from behind and some passengers sustained injuries in the head.

The injured were rushed to the railway hospital including Pintu Roy (30), Abdul Manik (54),  Mukesh Kumar (18), Niranjan Debnath (48), Edmund Sutago (4), Bhantegi Sutago (40). As the passengers of the train were injured in the accident, the train left Badarpur railway station two hours late. Meanwhile, the negligence of Rajiv Kumar has surfaced in the initial investigation while investigating the cause of the accident. A message has been immediately dispatched to the Lumding and Maligaon headquarters reporting the accident and its primary cause.

 It may be mentioned that, all connecting trains have been delayed and the railway officials said that the general public have extended their full support to provide swift medical treatment to the injured passengers in the aftermath of the accident.

Chief minister Tarun Gogoi said that the Army court had taken a lenient view of the crime. He told reporters in Jorhat that he would urge the defence ministry to review the case to ensure proper justice to the 19-year-old victim. Delhi police have arrested a local youth on Tuesday charging him with beating up an Assamese girl in the national capital on Monday. The incident took place near the Dwaraka metro station after the victim met one of her friends in the evening. Immediately after she met her friend, a youth called her and as he looked at him, the youth started beating up her and left the spot. Security forces are spreading tentacles along the Assam-Meghalaya border against ULFA and GNLA who are preparing to launch dangerous offensive during the Republic Day.Two suspected hardcore GNLA were killed at an encounter with army and police in Goalpara district on Tuesday. Security forces launched a major offensive against militants at Khardang bordering Meghalaya. The heavy exchange of firing took place when three youths attacked the security forces. ULFA’s anti talk faction on Tuesday claimed the responsibility of the attack at a police station in Sonari where a policeman was injured and several vehicles have been damaged on Monday midnight.In a statement ULFA’s publicity wing said that it was launched to retaliate the killing of the innocent youth in Tinsukia district in the name of encounter with ULFA. Policemen Lila Chetia was later shifted to hospital and his condition is stable. ULFA steps up attack in the run up to the Republic Day slated for January 26. The banned insurgent outfit launched a major offensive in Sivasagar district on Monday midnight leaving a policeman injured and damaging a police station.The incident took place on Mondayu midnight at Namtula in Sonari police station where the ULFA militants sprayed bullets at the police station for around 20 minute leaving a commando jawan injured.Amid firing the militants lobbed a powerful grenade at the police station.
