The Assembly elections in the state will be held in three-phases.

The polls for 126-member Assam assembly will be held on March 27, April 1 and April 6.

Results will be announced on May 2

The Assam government has recommended CBI probe into the rhino poaching incidents that repeatedly rocks Kaziranga National Park. Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Sunday said that the state government had already written to CBI for probe into the recent rhino poaching incidents in KNP. He said that it might be a big political conspiracy into the big horn animal killings, where militants are also involved. The move came 24 hours after poachers killed ome more rhino in the word heritage site. Assam had lost at least 42 rhinos in 2012, where poachers killed 21 rhinos in KNP. In this year, poachers killed seven rhinos in Kaziranga.
Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Sunday said that the Assam State Police Accountability Commission would be set up in several areas to ensure better public participation in accountability and transparency at various levels of police hierarchy.Gogoi told reporters in Guwahati that the panel now based in Guwahati will have a forum each in upper Assam, north bank of river Brahmaputra and Barak Valley in south Assam for the convenience of people. He said that the forums will be headed by a judge, he said, publicity will be given on the accountability initiative for public information and participation.
Hundreds of people had a narrow escape from a major incident, when a powerful blast took place in Gossaigaon minutes after the Howrah-Guwahati down Garibrath Express passed Goabari in Kokrajhar district. There was no casualty or injury.The bomb is believed to have been planted by the anti-talk faction of the National Democratic Front of Bodoland which exploded at 1:10 in the wee hours two minutes after the train passed the area between Gossaigaon and Fakiragram. Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Friday moved Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh seeking his intervention in the construction of three dams on the upstream of the Brahmaputra. In a letter to the Prime Minster, Gogoi pointed out that though the Chinese Government had given assurance that they would take care of the interest of downstream areas, the State Government has apprehensions that it might affect the State.Gogoi in his letter said that the ‘entire Assam economy East is dependent on the Brahmaputra and that the construction of three new dams on the upstream of the river might affect the interest of the region in the downstream areas.

Customs department officials in Guwahati seized 20,000 bottles of phensedyl cough syrup from a truck in on the way to Dhaka via Agatala. Around 200 bottles of phensedyl cough syrup worth Rs 20 lakh were seized at Lokhora from a truck from Punjab. The bottles were kept inside cartoons of beauty products to avoid police.
In a bizarre incident that rocked the entire state, two criminals broke into the Morigaon district Chief Judicial Magistrate's court and stole files relating to criminal cases on Thursday night. Police arrested the duo on Friday.The windows were broken and 30 files were stolen to be thrown away in a nearby drain. One of the criminals Bimal Hazarika, however, left behind his wallet from where his driving license was found by police this morning. Police immediately tracked him along with his accomplice Asim Bordoloi and arrested them. The 30 files were recovered from the drain and returned to the court.
