Incarcerated ,Peasant rights activist Akhil Gogoi who heads the Raijor Dal and is languishing in jail since December 2019 on charges of sedition and inciting violence during the anti-Citizenship (Amendment) Act movement, has won from Sibsagar, making it a history in the Assam Politics to have been elected a legsilator from jail. Contesting as an independent, he defeated his nearest rival Surabhi Rajkonwari of the BJP by a margin of 11,875 votes. The 45 year old peasant leader is currently undergoing treatment and is admitted to the Guwahati Medical College Hospital and had filed his nomination from the medical facility. The consolidation of the leftist votes, anti-CAA sentiments and an campaign by his mother Priyoda Gogoi are believed to have worked for the peasant leader in electing him as a legislator . NEDA convenor and BJP strongman Himanta Biswa Sarma, who won the Jalukbari seat by more than 1 lakh votes spared no time to congratulate the peasant leader . Talking to mediapersons he said, “I congratulate Akhil Gogoi on his victory. I expect him to play the role of a constructive opposition ,”. Contrarily former student laeder, Lurinjyoti Gogoi who heads the Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) cut a sorry figure in both the eastern Assam seats he had contested. The AJP leader finished third behind the BJP and the Congress candidates in Duliajan and Naharkatia.

Governor J B Patnaik said that the government's counter insurgency operations have fetched dividends where the republic day boycott call was defied. In his address after unfurling the national flag in Khanapara in Guwahati, he said that steps are being taken to bring about overall socio-economic development in the state.
He said that the government is leaving no stone unturned to put Assam on a track of rapid development process. Patnaik also said that government was committed to fighting corruption.

Normal situation prevailed on Republic Day on Saturday. Trains and air services operated as usual though long distance and city private buses kept off the roads as the transport operators gave holiday to their staff on account of R-Day. National flags were seen fluttering in banks, educational institutions, etc., remained closed. Buses, private taxis and autorickshaws of state-run Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC) plied as usual. Defying militant diktat, Republic Day was celebrated across the stat with much fanfare and cultural extravaganza. A powerful Improvised Explosive Devices was recovered ahead of the Republic Day celebrations in Darrang district on Thursday.The bomb was found near the Mangaldoi police station and Republic Day parade ground in the morning. Chief minister Tarun Gogoi said that the Army court had taken a lenient view of the crime. He told reporters in Jorhat that he would urge the defence ministry to review the case to ensure proper justice to the 19-year-old victim. According to Gogoi, the army court has been insensitive to the seriousness of the crime and has taken a lenient view.He said that imprisonment for only three months is far less than the heinous crime committed by the armyman.
