Raijor Dal Holds Rally in Nazira, Demands Compensation for Flood Victims

NAZIRA, September 7, 2026 — The Raijor Dal organised a massive public rally in Nazira on Saturday, demanding adequate compensation and rehabilitation for people affected by the devastating July 19 floods in Upper Assam and a CBI investigation into the causes that allegedly aggravated the disaster.

Addressing the gathering, Raijor Dal president and Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi warned that if the ₹15,000 financial assistance promised to flood-affected families is not credited to their bank accounts by September 8, his party would launch a statewide protest on September 9.

Gogoi alleged that the government has failed to deliver the promised assistance to flood victims, particularly in Nazira, despite the constituency being represented by a ruling-party MLA.

He demanded that the government revise its existing Financial Assistance During Disaster policy and provide ₹10 lakh to every flood-affected family and ₹10 lakh to each affected business establishment.

Gogoi also demanded that women from all flood-affected families be brought under the Orunodoi scheme and provided ₹2,500 per month for one year as additional financial support.

Calling for an independent investigation into the causes of the floods, Gogoi demanded a CBI probe into alleged illegal stone and coal mining, which he claimed may have contributed to the severity of the disaster. He also urged the Central Government to declare the calamity a national disaster and provide additional assistance to the affected population.

The Raijor Dal leader warned that failure to provide the demanded compensation of ₹10 lakh to each affected family would trigger a broader agitation against the government and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

The rally drew a large gathering of party workers, flood-affected residents and supporters. Speakers highlighted the continuing economic hardship faced by families whose homes, agricultural land, businesses and livelihoods were affected by the July 19 floods.

The Raijor Dal maintained that immediate financial assistance, long-term livelihood rehabilitation and an independent investigation into the factors that contributed to the scale of the disaster are essential to ensure justice for flood-affected people across Upper Assam.
