Nine years on, three surrender in Lafiqul Islam murder case; ABMSU demands fast-track justice

KOKRAJHAR, September 6, 2026 — Nearly nine years after the daylight killing of former All Bodo Minority Students’ Union (ABMSU) president Lafiqul Islam Ahmed, three accused surrendered before the CBI Court at Chandmari in Guwahati on Saturday, giving a fresh turn to the long-pending murder case.

The accused have been identified as Rupa Brahma, Bhadreswar Basumatary and Dinkur Mushahary.

Lafiqul Islam was shot dead at Titaguri in Kokrajhar district on August 1, 2017. His killing had triggered widespread outrage and demands for a thorough investigation and justice.

The case was subsequently taken up by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which has been probing the circumstances surrounding the murder.

Reacting to the latest development, ABMSU president Taison Hussain demanded stringent punishment for all those found guilty in the case and called for a fast-track trial.

Hussain also urged investigators to uncover the motive behind the killing and identify those who allegedly masterminded or were otherwise involved in the murder.

“The Lafiqul Islam murder case cannot be allowed to drag on indefinitely,” Hussain said, reiterating that the ABMSU and citizens have been consistently demanding justice for the slain student leader.

He called upon the authorities to ensure a speedy trial and bring the investigation to its logical conclusion.
