Dikhow Embankment Repairs Begin After Flood Devastation, Residents Question Delay

NAZIRA, July 23, 2026 — The Water Resources Department has begun repairing and strengthening embankments along the Dikhow River in Nazira Co-District, but only after devastating floods exposed years of neglect, triggering public outrage.

Repair work was underway on Thursday at Sanbasa village under the supervision of departmental engineers, with local residents joining the effort to reinforce a breached embankment that had become a major flood threat.

Residents alleged that repeated warnings about the deteriorating condition of Dikhow embankments had gone unheeded for years, allowing weak sections to fail during the recent floods that inundated large parts of Nazira.

One of the worst-hit locations was near Budbari Satra in Sanbasa village, where erosion breached the embankment, enabling floodwaters from the Dikhow to spill into surrounding areas and endanger nearby settlements.

Local sources said the Budbari Satra Development Committee had earlier submitted a memorandum to the Nazira Co-District Commissioner seeking urgent repairs. Despite the warning, no substantial work was undertaken before the floods.

Officials had initially relied on sandbags to contain overflowing waters, but the temporary measure failed as the embankment suffered further damage.

Following mounting public pressure, the department launched repair work, with volunteers from Budbari and Sanbasa villages working alongside officials to strengthen the vulnerable stretch.

Residents, however, described the ongoing work as only a temporary solution and urged the government to undertake permanent embankment strengthening to prevent recurring floods and erosion.
